Item The Effect of Scapular Stabilisation Exercises on Posture and Pain in Patients with Fibromyalgia: A Randomised Controlled Trial(2023) Polat, Hakan; Bayramlar, Kezban; Turhan, Begamhan; 0000-0003-0842-2059; B-8254-2018Background/Aims Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome characterised by chronic widespread pain, postural problems, sleep disorders, fatigue and psychiatric disorders. This study investigated the effect of scapular stabilisation exercises on cervical posture and pain in patients with fibromyalgia.Methods The study included 59 patients between the ages of 18-60 years. Individuals were divided into two groups: the study group (n=29) and control group (n=30). Both groups underwent hot pack application, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and ultrasonography before the exercises. This application continued for a total of 6 weeks in both groups, 5 days a week. After this treatment, the control group was asked to perform conventional shoulder exercises and the scapular stabilisation group was asked to perform scapular stabilisation exercises. The patients were evaluated in terms of pain and cervical posture.Results Pain levels significantly decreased in both groups after the treatment (P=0.019). A decrease in tragus-to-wall distance occurred in the conventional exercise group (P=0.005). Scapular stabilisation exercises were found to be more effective than conventional exercises In terms of pain (P<0.001) and cervical posture, (P=0.024).Conclusions Both exercise programmes reduced pain levels in patients with fibromyalgia. However, scapular stabilisation exercises were more effective at both reducing pain and improving posture. Physiotherapists can use scapular stabilisation exercises to patients with fibromyalgia to reduce pain, improve posture and reduce the load on the joints.Item Fibromyalgia Syndrome in Turkish Hemodialysis Patients(2016) Leblebici, Berrin; Ozelsancak, Ruya; Yilmaz, Emine Ece; Doruk, Pinar; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6241-268X; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0788-8319; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8602-6038; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3528-3712; 26198740; AAM-3220-2021; AAD-5716-2021; AAA-8043-2021The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) in hemodialysis (HD) patients and to assess whether this syndrome is associated with gender, age, duration of HD, or various laboratory parameters. This study was composed of 221 chronic HD patients (99 females and 122 males), and we recorded each participant's age, gender, causes of kidney failure, HD duration, education level, and symptoms related to FMS, which was diagnosed according to the 2010 American College of Rheumatology criteria. We documented the laboratory parameters for all patients. In addition, patients with FMS filled out the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire. Twenty-two patients met the diagnostic criteria for FMS (9%), and there were no statistically significant differences related to age, gender, or HD duration between FMS and non-FMS groups (P>0.05). In addition, the education levels were lower in patients diagnosed with FMS (P<0.05), and there were statistically significant differences related to sleep disturbance, fatigue, and cognitive symptoms between the two groups (P<0.05) as well. However, their laboratory parameters were similar (P>0.05). There was a higher prevalence of FMS in HD patients than in the general population. Sleep disturbances, fatigue, education level, and cognitive symptoms were associated with FMS, but there was no correlation between the laboratory parameters and this condition.Item Evaluation of affective temperament and anxiety-depression levels in fibromyalgia patients: a pilot study(2019) Isik-Ulusoy, Selen; 0000-0003-2550-8989; 30994852Objective: Fibromyalgia (FM) patients have higher rates of depression and anxiety disorders than healthy controls. Affective temperament features are subclinical manifestations of mood disorders. Our aim was to evaluate the affective temperaments of FM patients and investigate their association with depression and anxiety levels and clinical findings. Methods: This cross-sectional study included FM patients and healthy controls. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to determine patient anxiety and depression levels, and the Temperament Scale of Memphis, Pisa and San Diego, self-administered version was applied to assess affective temperaments in all subjects. Disease severity was assessed in FM patients with the Fibromyalgia Criteria and Severity Scales and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). Differences between groups were evaluated using Student's t-tests. Correlations among parameters were performed. Results: This study involved 38 patients with FM (30 female) and 30 healthy controls (25 female). Depressive, anxious and cyclothymic temperaments were significantly higher in FM patients than healthy controls. Statistically significant positive correlations were found between HADS depression score and all temperaments except hyperthymic, as well as between HADS anxiety score and cyclothymic and anxious temperaments. HADS depression and anxiety scores were correlated with symptom severity. We found a higher risk of depression and anxiety among FM patients with higher FIQ scores. Conclusion: This study is the first to evaluate affective temperament features of FM patients. Evaluating temperamental traits in FM patients may help clinicians determine which patients are at risk for depression and anxiety disorders.
