    Multidimensional Intuitive-Analytic Thinking Style and Its Relation To Moral Concerns, Epistemically Suspect Beliefs, and Ideology

    Literature highlights the distinction between intuitive and analytic thinking as a prominent cognitive style distinction, leading to the proposal of various theories within the framework of the dual process model. However, it remains unclear whether individuals differ in their thinking styles along a single dimension, from intuitive to analytic, or if other dimensions are at play. Moreover, the presence of numerous thinking style measures, employing different terminology but conceptually overlapping, leads to confusion. To address these complexities, Newton et al. suggested the idea that individuals vary across multiple dimensions of intuitive-analytic thinking styles and distinguished thinking styles between 4 distinct types: Actively open-minded thinking, close-minded thinking, preference for effortful thinking, and preference for intuitive thinking. They proposed a new measure for this 4-factor disposition, The 4-Component Thinking Styles Questionnaire (4-CTSQ), to comprehensively capture the psychological outcomes related to thinking styles; however, no independent test exists. In the current pre-registered studies, we test the validity of 4-CTSQ for the first time beyond the original study and examine the association of the proposed measure with various factors, including morality, conspiracy beliefs, paranormal and religious beliefs, vaccine hesitancy, and ideology in an underrepresented culture, Turkiye. We found that the correlated 4-factor model of 4-CTSQ is an appropriate measure to capture individual differences based on cognitive style. The results endorse the notion that cognitive style differences are characterized by distinct structures rather than being confined to two ends of a single continuum.

    Resistance to Common Insecticides and Mechanisms of Resistance in Aphis Pomi De Geer (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in Apple Orchards in Turkey

    The Green apple aphid, Aphis pomi de Geer (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the most common and serious insect pests of apple orchards in Turkey. This species feeds on succulent tissue of trees, which can lead to leaf curling, stunting, distorted tip growth, black-sooty mold, and a vector of some plant viruses. Growers prefer to apply insecticide applications heavily to control the green apple aphid in commercial apple orchards. However, there have not been conducted any research study on insecticide resistance of A. pomi in Turkey. The resistance status of A. pomi populations collected from commercially apple orchards in the Central Anatolia region was investigated to: acetamiprid (neonicotinoid), the specific aphicide pirimicarb (carbamate), beta-cyfluthrin (synthetic pyrethroid), and chlorpyrifos-ethyl (organophosphate) insecticides. All populations were characterised for the first time using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to determine the esterase banding patterns. Biochemical assays revealed higher activity of total esterase. This is the first study conducted to determine glutathione S-transferase activity related to the insecticide resistance of A. pomi. It was determined that the resistance levels reached to 14.93 fold to acetamiprid, 3.74 fold to beta-cyfluthrin, 4.19 fold to chlorpyrifos-ethyl, and 4.33 fold to pirimicarb. The present study revealed neonicotinoid, organophosphate, carbamate, and pyrethroid resistance in A. pomi populations from the Central Anatolia Regions of Turkey. It also clearly showed that the enhanced esterase enzyme activity is the main resistance mechanism against carbamate pirimicarb resistance. The present study is the first insecticide resistance study on A. pomi for Turkey.

    Questioning the Dimensions of Digital Surveillance and Parental Supervision: YouTube Challenges and Video Recommendation System

    The development of communication technologies and the active use of social media platforms have led to the fusion of the existing culture with the digital culture formed in this field. While digital culture enables individuals to transfer their norms and values to social media platforms, on the other hand, it has adapted its norms and values to daily culture. YouTube has become one of the main social media platforms on which this culture is especially based and where it is defined as participatory culture. It is thought that especially younger age groups are included in this culture and that provides an occasion for them to take part in surveillance practices by providing data to big data. In this study, to make sense of this situation, the theories of digital sociology and digital surveillance sociology were rethought and qualitative research was conducted to look at the ways in which children aged 9-13 are involved in big data. The study focuses on their YouTube practices, especially their experiences of the challenges connected with using YouTube and the video recommendation system, and suggests precautions where necessary. After conducting netnography on YouTube, the sample of the study was determined using purposeful sampling and snowball sampling techniques, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 23 children upon obtaining consent forms from their families. The findings of the research revealed that usage patterns of social media platforms and the resulting consequences can reach very dangerous levels and that the degree of parental supervision should be reconsidered.

    Differentiation of Memory Processing Stages and Effect of Demographic Variables with Alternative Scoring Approaches To The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test

    Background The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is the third most popular verbal memory test and the tenth most frequently used neuropsychological test. The original scoring system of RAVLT does not differentiate stages of memory processing, but a recently developed composite scoring system has this potential. The objectives were to compare the two systems in terms of their capacity to differentiate the stages of memory processing and to study the effect of demographic variables on the learning trials (T) of the Turkish form of RAVLT (T-RAVLT). Method The sample consisted of 600 Caucasian Turkic adults, who were categorized into three levels of age, three levels of education, and two levels of gender. Individual administration of T-RAVLT was performed using the standard procedures of RAVLT. Results The components in the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and latent variables in the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the original scores were consistent with sequentially ordered T-RAVLT stages. Demographic variables (age, education, and gender) affected performances in all of the learning trials. The composite scores revealed retrieval and retention as separate components, but these scores could not be predicted from the relevant T-RAVLT scores. Conclusions Findings recommend a combined utilization of the two scoring systems: The original system to provide scores on the performance at each stage of T-RAVLT and the combined system to provide separate scores on learning, retention, and retrieval, the three stages of memory processing. A selective effect of demographic variables on T1 was not observed, indicating a need for cross-cultural studies that are meticulously controlled for age and education.

    Relationship between Multidimensional Poverty Indicators and Health Behaviors among Turkish Children

    The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between multidimensional poverty indicators and health behaviors among Turkish children. The sample of the study was determined to include at least one school from each socioeconomic status group in the districts of Ankara, which are classified into four socioeconomic groups, and the data were collected by applying face-to-face questionnaires to a total of 4,276 children, 2145 boys and 2136 girls, between the ages of 10 and 14. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared test and binary logistic regression in the PASW Statistics program. The most striking results of the analysis showed that the female children, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students, those who rated their health as good, those with a high or medium family affluence levels, those who were not deprived according to the Child Deprivation Index, those who rated their family income level as high or medium, and those who never suffered from hunger were more likely to be in the group with healthy behaviors (p<0.05). Accordingly, some school-based interventions and policies to be implemented in the family medicine system are recommended to promote the healthy behaviors of children, especially those living in poverty.

    Approximation by Truncated Lupas Operators of Max-Product Kind

    The goals of the present paper are to introduce truncated Lupas type operators of max-product kind and give an estimation for the degree of approximation with respect to first modulus of continuity function. We prove that this estimate can not be improved; on the other hand, for some subclasses of functions, better degree of approximation is obtained. We also showed the piecewise convexity of the constructed operators on the interval [0, 1].

    Aiding and Abetting Survival: Americanizing Robinson Crusoe through Adaptation

    Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) has been insistently adapted to both the big screen and TV throughout the 20th century and well into the 21st, the earliest version dating back to 1902 and the most recent to 2016. Although a full list of all versions would be elusive and also redundant, almost 50 adaptations are readily available for viewing and/or for analysis. Moving away from the`fidelity' criticism in the earlier vein of adaptation studies and proceeding from the argument that all adaptations are essentially rewritings, alternative ways in which the source text may be reconstructed in an ultimately intertextual framework, this paper scrutinizes American screen adaptations of Robinson Crusoe, namely Robinson Crusoe on Mars (Dir. Byron Haskin, 1964), Lt. Robinson Crusoe, U.S.N. (Dir. Byron Paul, 1966), and Cast Away (Dir. Robert Zemeckis, 2000). Far from shedding new light on an almost-exhausted source text, these rewritings reflect more about their own discourses, relating to the historical and social contexts of their own making. In so doing, they `Americanize' Robinson Crusoe. As such, three centuries after its publication, Robinson Crusoe is still being repeatedly reinvented and reconstructed in film, and this analysis investigates the dialogical relations among these adaptations while, at the same time, emphasizing how every new adapted version of a work of literature aids and abets the survival of its source text.

    Adultization and Blurring the Boundaries of Childhood in the Late Modern Era

    Although the modern Western concept of childhood is rapidly disappearing in the age of late modernity, this study asserts that childhood (as it is lived) has not disappeared but has been transformed. An integrated approach to childhood is employed in order to go beyond binary oppositions such as the Global North versus the Global South and/or childhood versus childhoods. It is argued that children while constructing their childhoods are confronted with processes of individualisation and globalisation through which new forms of adultization have emerged as concepts of 'child consumerism' and 'child citizenship'. Beyond the opposing views involving the disappearance of childhood or its liberation, this study concludes that the concept of adultization can be used to problematise and analyse childhood in its current state.
