Item Validation and Correlates of The Vicarious Embarrassment Scale(2014) Uysal, Ahmet; Akbas, Gulcin; Helvaci, Elif; Metin, Irem; HGT-9462-2022Vicarious embarrassment can be defined as embarrassment resulting from witnessing embarrassing behaviors of strangers. We developed a scale to measure individual differences in the tendency to experience vicarious embarrassment, and examined its association with related constructs. In Study 1, we found that vicarious embarrassment is associated positively with susceptibility to embarrassment, empathy, perspective-taking, and fear of negative evaluation, while it is associated negatively with self-esteem. In Study 2, we found that vicarious embarrassment is uniquely associated with embarrassment in response to a poor performance of a stranger on a TV show, independent of susceptibility to embarrassment, empathy, perspective-taking, and fear of negative evaluation. Although the limited literature on this topic focused on the role of empathy in this type of embarrassment, these findings suggest that there is more to vicarious embarrassment than empathy or perspective-taking. A total of 603 high school students from Ankara Turkey, were selected using convenient sampling to participate in this study. During the course of this study, the FQS was first translated into Turkish and then its psychometric properties were examined. The construct validity of the FQS was tested using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Before performing the CFA, the assumption of missing values, outliers, normality, and collineriaty were checked. According to the results, the 22-item FQS consisting of 5 dimensions had acceptable goodness of fit indexes (S-Bx(2)/df = 669.12/199, p = .00, RMSEA = .063, CFI = .97, GFI = .88, NNFI = .96). The Cronbach alpha coefficients of the subscales ranged between .66 and .86. The internal consistency for the entire scale was alpha = .85. In conclusion, an instrument consisting of 22 items and 5 subscales was prepared for future researchers.Item On The Q - Seidel Matrix(2014) Firengiz, M. Cetin; Tuglu, Naim; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9588-0295; HNQ-9215-2023Clarke and et. al recently introduced the q-Seidel matrix, and obtained some properties. In this article, we define a different form of q-Seidel matrix by a(n)(k) (x, q) = xq(n+2k-3)a(n)(k-1) (x, q)+an(k-1)(x, q)+a(n+1)(k-1) with k >= 1, n >= 0 for an initial sequence a(n)(0) (x, q) = a(n) (x, q). By using our definition, we obtain several properties of the q-analogues of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials.Item Mesenchymal Stem Cells Administered Intraperitoneally Have A Potent Effects on the Experimental Allergic Airway Disease(2015) Isik, S.; Adan Gokbulut, A.; Karaman, M.; Kiray, M.; Bagriyanik, H. A.; Caglayan Sozmen, S.; Kozanoglu, I; Karaman, O.; Baran, Y.; Uzuner, N.; 0000-0002-5268-1210; 0000-0003-4064-7637; AAE-1241-2021; H-7577-2013Item Investigation of the Effect of Melatonin Administration on Calpain-1 Expression and Atrophic Morphology in Atrophy of Mouse Myoblast Cell Line Exposed to Hydrogen Peroxide(2019) Karimi, Nazli; Kartal, Yasemin; Budak, Murat Timur; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3534-6621; AAL-6138-2021Item Solution of MHD Flow with BEM Using Direct Radial Basis Function Interpolation(2019) Gurbuz, M; Tezer-Sezgin, Munevver; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7746-9005; HLG-7277-2023In this study, the two-dimensional steady MHD Stokes and MHD incompressible flows of a viscous and electrically conducting fluid are considered in a lid-driven cavity under the impact of a uniform horizontal magnetic field. The MHD flow equations are solved iteratively in terms of velocity components, stream function, vorticity and pressure by using direct interpolation boundary element method (DIBEM) in which the inhomogeneity in the domain integral is interpolated by using radial basis functions. The boundary is discretized by constant elements and the sufficient number of the interior points are taken. The interpolation points are different from the source points due to the singularities of the fundamental solution. It is found that as Hartmann number increases, the main vortex of the flow shifts through the moving top lid with a decreasing magnitude and secondary flow below it is squeezed through the main flow leaving the rest of the cavity almost stagnant. The increase in M develops side layer near the moving lid, but weakens the effect of Re in the MHD incompressible flow.Item Contemporary Trauma Narratives: Liminality and the Ethics of Form(2018) Sarikaya Sen, Merve; 0000-0003-2091-2536; AEG-2545-2022Item Observing the Late Development of Childhood Sociology in Turkey(2018) Orman, Turkan Firinci; 0000-0001-9327-4331; 0000-0001-9137-0899Item The Re-Materialization of Yasar Kemal's Teneke at The Crossroads of Genres(2017) Dundar, Leyla BurcuYasar Kemal (1923-2015) is a leading author of Turkish literature with worldwide acclaim, whose oeuvre is regarded as the incarnation of Anatolian culture. Teneke, one of his early works, was written in 1954 and published in installments in a newspaper the very same year. Although the text appeared as a book as early as 1955, it is apparent that an indecision regarding its genre was present. Teneke, translated into English as The Drumming-Out, was addressed as a "short novel or a long novelette" on the book cover of the second edition dating from 1959. Besides, it was included in the collected short stories of the author published in 1967; however, it was excluded from the 4th edition in 1972. Therefore, this year onwards, it came into being as a separate book. But more was yet to come: In 1965, Yasar Kemal adapted the text into a play, which was staged both in Turkey and abroad. Yet this version of the text was not published for years to come. 1978 onwards, The Drumming-Out was published as a book with novel and play versions together; and since then, this format has been preserved. Its publishing history proves that, Yasar Kemal was continuously occupied with issues regarding the intersection of literary genres. The text's being fictionalized as a novel, short story, and play gradually; and it's finally being materialized as a novel and play simultaneously invites a comparative analysis. In this paper, different versions of the text are analyzed so as to discuss the author's perceptions and assumptions on genres and their reading public. For this purpose, the dissociation of contents and employment of diverse techniques specific to certain genres are investigated. As a result, the boundaries between genres and corresponding production/consumption strategies are scrutinized by examining the materialization of the same text in different forms.Item Fission Yeast srm1 is Involved in Stress Response and Cell Cycle(2017) Gevrekci, Aslihan Ors; 28345120Polyamines are well-conserved, multifunctional polycations that contribute to a number of processes in the cells such as cell cycle, apoptosis, stress response, and gene expression. Therefore, polyamine levels should be kept under strict regulation by specific polyamine transporters and polyamine synthases. In this study, the aim is to experimentally characterize a predicted spermidine synthase gene srm1, which was identified upon sequence similarity, in fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In an attempt to understand the role of this gene in cell cycle and stress response, deletion mutant of srm1 was generated and analyzed in terms of cell cycle regulation and environmental stress response. The results showed that srm1 Delta cells had elongated cell size and were sensitive to osmotic stress, while they showed no sensitivity to DNA-damaging agents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental characterization of srm1 gene and its role in cell cycle progression and stress response.
