    Is sepsis still a problem in burns?

    From Ist January 1988 to 31st December 1988, 61 patients were admitted to our Bums Centre. The overall mortality was 19.67% 12 patients died and 49 patients were discharged. 8 (13.11%) adult patients died due to sepsis; in 7 of them, the bum cause was flame and in one electricity. 4 children died due to sepsis (bum cause hot liquid). Pseudomonas grew in 10 patients (83.33%), 7 adults and 3 children, and mixed bacteria in 2 patients (16.67%): in one adult (Pseudomonas, E. coli and Staph. coag+) and in one child (Pseudomonas, Proteus and Enterobacter).In this study, the great majority of evidence gathered by us revealed that sepsis is still an important problem among the patients who have presented at our Burns Centre.

    Başkent Üniversitesi Transplantasyon Konulu Yayınların İncelenmesi Science Citation Index Verilerine Dayalı Bir Araştırma (1993-2009)

    Günümüzde tıp konusunda yapılan bilimsel çalışmalar diğer alanlara göre daha hızlı artmaktadır. Dolayısıyla tıp alanındaki bilimsel yayınların niteliğinin ölçülmesi bibliyometrik çalışmaları da beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu çalışmada tıp konusunda literatürde önemli bir yere sahip olan Başkent Üniversitesi ele alınmıştır. ISI Web of Science (WOS) kapsamındaki Science Citation Index (SCI) ile yapılan değerlendirmelere göre Başkent Üniversitesi adresli yayınlar incelenmiştir. Üniversitenin en çok yayın yaptığı alanlardan biri olan ?Transplantasyon? konusu ele alınmış, 1993-2009 yıllarında yapılan çalışmaların bilimsel üretime katkısı, bünyesindeki dergilerin etki faktörleri ve atıf oranları saptanmıştır. Yayınların niteliğine ilişkin değerlendirmelerde bulunabilmek için Journal Citation Reports (JCR) ile 2008 yılına ait etki faktörü verilerinden yararlanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler anlamlandırılmış, değerlendirme aşamasında Microsoft Excel ve SPSS 11.5 programları kullanılmıştır. In these days, it is clear that scientific researches about medicine increase more than other branches. So measuring of the qualities of scientific publications has revealed the bibliometric studies. In this study, Baskent University that has an important possessor on medical topics in literature, is taken up. According to the evaluations that have been made by Science Citation Index (SCI) which is involved by ISI Web of Science (WOS), the publications of Baskent University have been examined. "Transplantation", one of the most published branches of the University, has been studied and the scientific contribution of the studies which is published between 1993-2009, impact factor of these studies and the citation rate have been determined. To evaluate the qualities of the publications exactly, the effect factors data of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in 2008 have been used. Obtained datas have been explained and on evaluation step, some programs have been used such as Microsoft Excell and SPSS 11.5.

    Prostat Kanseri ̇ İlintili MikroRNA Kümelerinin Tespiti

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non- coding RNAs of 22 nucleotides which normally function as negative regulators of target mRNA expression at the posttran- scriptional level. miRNAs play a role for one or more target genes by suppressing in processes as growth, differentiation, proliferation and cell death. Recent evidence has shown that miRNA mutations or mis-expression correlate with various hu- man cancers and indicates that miRNAs can function as tumour suppressors and oncogenes. MicroRNAs have been shown to repress the expression of important cancer-related genes and might prove useful in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In this study, hierarchical microRNA clusters are obtained through microarray expression data in order to analyze the microRNA prostate cancer relationships. Clustering results are evaluated by their biological relevance. It is seen that such approach can be useful in detectitn relationships between microRNAs and diseases.

    A Novel Blending Method for Automatic Seamless Image Mosaicing

    An image mosaic is a panoramic image generated by assembling sequential images belong to the same scene . This method is mainly used in mapping applications, the evaluation of the images acquired from unmanned aerial vehicles, and various computer vision applications. In this study, we proposed a novel blending method for automatic seamless image mosaicing from ground level photos taken by an digital camera. For the correction of consistent seams occurred during the mosaicing, we measured the color differences around the overlapping regions. For this purpose, first, we determined the intensity values of image pixels inside and outside the overlapping region boundary within a 1 pixel wide zone. Secondly, the intensity values were averaged and finally, the average values of color differences were applied to overlapping regions. Besides, a motion blur filter was performed for the same boundary regions in order to reduce the seams. In order to test the accuracy, a subjective evaluation metric was used. According to the results obtained, the seamless image mosaics were generated with a subjective accuracy of 74%. Our results indicate that the seams can be substantially reduced or completely eliminated, and the illumination differences are minimized.
