Investigating professional self-discrepancies of psychotherapists: The role of personal psychotherapy

Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to investigate psychotherapists’ self-discrepancies in terms of their profession and personal psychotherapy experiences of them. It was also aimed to explore the potential relationship between these concepts. For this purpose, qualitative research was carried out. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with 17 psychotherapists, 11 of whom had personal psychotherapy experience. The collected data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified, namely psychotherapist in the other chair, the frame, portrait of the psychotherapist, and fitting game. A total of 12 subthemes were identified. Mevcut çalışmada psikoterapistlerin mesleki anlamda yaşadıkları benlik uyuşmazlıkları ve kişisel psikoterapi deneyimlerinin incelenmesi hedeflenmiştir. Buna ek olarak, bu iki konsept arasındaki ilişkinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, nitel yöntemle bir çalışma yürütülmüştür. 11’i kişisel psikoterapi deneyimine sahip olan 17 psikoterapistle yüz yüze yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Toplanan veriler tema analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Dört ana tema oluşturulmuştur. Bunlar, öteki koltuktaki psikoterapist, çerçeve, psikoterapistin portresi ve uyum oyunu şeklinde adlandırılmıştır. Toplamda 12 adet alt tema belirlenmiştir.
