Haunted by guilt: Moral masochism and trauma in John Langan’s House of windows and the fisherman

Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of moral masochism induced by traumatic loss and guilt, as featured in John Langan’s Gothic novels, House of Windows (2009/2017) and The Fisherman (2016/2023). The study intends to show how various fictional characters from different backgrounds, primarily Roger, Dan, and the Fisherman, succumb to having an unconscious desire to punish themselves as a way of coping with overwhelming mental turmoil and guilt. Both novels have characters who cannot face their grief, and they end up getting stuck in paradoxical cycles of compulsive repetition, extreme guilt, and masochism. The study will also demonstrate that both novels employ Gothic elements such as uncanny places and supernatural forces to express internal psychological states of grief and guilt, while highlighting a broader discussion of the historical American context at the same time. Through an analysis of these Gothic elements, this study examines how unresolved trauma materializes in spectral presences and uncanny environments that both mirror the inner turmoil of the characters and reflect the anxieties and guilt arising from wars and displacement in the American context. Building on this framework, the analysis will examine Langan’s novels within a psychoanalytic and cultural context that links personal psychology to broader national American anxieties and issues. Ultimately, using the theories of mourning, melancholia, masochism, and the pleasure principle, this study aims to provide new insights into how John Langan’s House of Windows and The Fisherman represent the human tendency to seek redemption through the infliction of self-punishing behavior and tendencies. Bu çalışma, John Langan’ın House of Windows (2009/2017) ve The Fisherman (2016/2023) adlı Gotik romanlarındaki travmatik kayıp ve suçluluk duygusunun tetiklediği ahlaki mazoşizm olgusunu incelemektedir. Roger, Dan ve Balıkçı gibi karakterler, yoğun zihinsel çalkantı karşısında kendilerini cezalandırmaya yönelik bilinçdışı bir arzuya kapılmakta ve yaslarını doğrudan yaşayamadıkları için tekrar, suçluluk ve mazoşizm döngüsüne hapsolmaktadır. Her iki roman da esrarengiz mekânlar ve doğaüstü unsurlar aracılığıyla kaygı ve suçluluk duygularını görünür kılarken, aynı zamanda Amerikan tarihsel bağlamındaki savaş ve toplulukların yerinden edilmesi gibi travmaları da yansıtmaktadır. Bu şekilde çalışma, Langan’ın romanlarını kişisel psikolojiyi geniş çaplı Amerikan ulusal kaygıları ve sorunlarıyla ilişkilendiren psikanalitik ve kültürel bir bağlamda ele alacaktır. Sonuç olarak, yas, melankoli, mazoşizm ve haz ilkesi kuramları üzerinden, bu çalışmada Langan’ın House of Windows ve The Fisherman romanlarının insanın kendini cezalandırıcı davranışlar yoluyla kurtuluş arayışını nasıl temsil ettiğine dair yeni bir bakış açısı sunması amaçlanmaktadır.
