Efficiency in International Logistics: Trade, Emissions and the Case of Türkiye
    (Başkent Üniversitesi, 2025-09-25) Ergün,Mustafa
Purpose: This study examines the environmental efficiency of international logistics by exploring the relationships among trade volume, port infrastructure, energy intensity, and GHG emissions across countries. It aims to classify logistics typologies and evaluate the environmental impacts of trade-driven operations, with Türkiye as a focal case. Methodology: A cross-country empirical framework integrates data on per capita CO₂, methane, total GHG emissions, energy intensity, and trade volumes. The study uses data from the World Port Index (2019), TradeMap (2024), and Our World in Data (2024), the study applies K-means clustering to identify environmental logistics typologies and OLS regression to examine the effects of trade and energy intensity on CO₂ emissions. Türkiye is used as a comparative reference point. Findings: The study identifies three logistics typologies: environmentally efficient, transitional, and emissions-intensive. Regression results show energy intensity as the strongest predictor of CO₂ emissions (p < 0.001), while trade volume and its interaction are not significant. Türkiye falls within the transitional cluster, characterized by moderate energy consumption and relatively low emissions, even with high trade activity. Implications: The results underscore that sustainable trade hinges on energy-efficient logistics rather than reduced trade volumes. Policymakers should focus on optimizing energy use and modernizing infrastructure. Integrating emissions metrics into logistics and trade strategies can support greener transitions, especially in emerging economies. Limitations: The use of country-level data may obscure regional disparities and sector-specific emissions. Additionally, clustering may oversimplify complex logistics systems. Future research should incorporate subnational and logistics-specific data for greater precision.

(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2025-03-26) Yavuzoğlu, Ömer; Tuzlukaya,Şule; Asbaş, Caner
Purpose: This study aims to enhance our understanding of the interplay between social networks and international migration, shedding light on migrants' decision-making and integration into new societies. The research examines the social network patterns of refugees from various nationalities who left their home countries due to institutional changes and were granted refugee status, particularly those resettled via Turkiye. Methodology: The data from the UNHCR Resettlement Data Finder portal is analyzed to gain insights into the migration process. For analyses, social network analysis is implemented. As a result of the analyses, social network maps for migration traffic between immigration and emigration countries are prepared and degree centrality parameters for these countries are calculated for the years between 2003 to 2021. Findings: Analysis outcomes indicates that the migration and resettlement occurring through Turkiye has an impulse characteristic and driven by some economic and political events with significant and large effect called systemic shocks. Implications: This study has contributions to the literature and fills some gaps. First, it explains change and evolution in social networks, particularly migration networks with impulse approach and institutional shocks. Second, the integration of social network theory and social network analysis into migration studies in a new way has been performed. Also, evolution mechanism of migration flows has been expressed in terms of and compared to social network theory. Limitations: Since immigrant data were taken from the UHNC database, personal reasons of immigrants could not be included in the study.

The Rise of a New World Order and The Role of Higher Education
    (Başkent Üniversitesi, 2024-03-31) Sarıaslan,Halil
Purpose: The purpose of this article is to judge and/or interpret the consequences of some great political and socio-economic changes that have taken place in our world within the last few decades. Methodology: It is asserted if all these changes are put together and examined from a systems approach viewpoint, one can realize that some gigantic trends are taking place in our world, and that these trends have been shaping up a new world order in the 21st century step by step. Findings: Rather than the haphazard progress of the rise of the new world order, the support and contribution of higher education institutions is recommended. Higher education can play an important role in supporting the globalization process in the right direction, and the study will explain what it can do for this. Implications: The new world of the 21st century will be a single globe, where pluralistic democracy and competitive market economy are complementing each other, and that all human beings are to be considered as equal and free global citizens of this world. This process is significantly being accelerated by computerized technologies. It is thought that in such a global world order, closer relations can be developed and cooperation will be easier as doctrinal ideologies among countries disappear and countries have much more common political and economic values. Limitations: In the study, there is no analysis was made at the country level to examine existing cultural differences, and the issues were discussed only from a global perspective.

Does Blue-Collars’ Well-Being Always Enhance Job Engagement? The Moderating Influence of Meaningful Work
(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2023-09-30) Kızrak, Meral; Güner Kibaroğlu,Gamze
Purpose: Integrating the assumptions of Self-Regulation Theory, the Job Characteristics Model and the Positive Psychology Approach, this empirical study aims to investigate the moderating role of meaningful work in the relationship between well-being and job engagement among blue-collar workers, contributing to an enhanced understanding of the complex interplay between these constructs. Methodology: The research adopted a quantitative research design by utilizing data obtained from blue-collar workers (n:237). The data, collected through an online method using scales with high levels of reliability and validity, was analyzed using Smart PLS 4 and IBM SPSS 26 software. The hypotheses and research model were tested employing the Bootstrapping analysis and structural equation modelling. Findings: The relationship between well-being and job engagement among blue-collar workers is influenced by the level of meaningful work, meaning that high meaningful work corresponds to a positive well-being-job engagement link while low meaningful work alters this relationship by negatively affecting job engagement through well-being. Implications: Managers should adopt a supportive leadership style in the blue-collar work environment to enhance the well-being and job engagement levels of employees. Additionally, blue-collar workers should have diversified tasks to increase their interest in their jobs and the level of meaningfulness associated with their work. Limitations: Limitations include a Turkish-only participant sample, potentially limiting generalization; self-report measures introducing response bias; cross-sectional data hindering causal relationship establishment; and a sole reliance on quantitative methods, omitting qualitative insights.

Social Network Theory in Project Management: A Bibliometric Analysis
    (Başkent Üniversitesi, 2023-09-30) Hafizoglu,Mustafa; Tuzlukaya Öz,Şule
Purpose: This study employs a bibliometric analysis of project management literature from 2001 to 2022 to investigate the use of social network theory in project management. The main goal is not only to present the current state of the social network theory usage in project management but also to explore emerging trends of this new field in project management. Methodology: Bibliometric analysis is used by focusing on related articles between the years 2001-2022 in the Web of Science database to investigate the state and evolution of social network theory in project management. Cluster analysis which is a powerful tool employed in SNA (Social Network Analysis) is utilized for the grouping of items based on similarities or distances between them. Findings: The study revealed that although the Social Network Theory (SNT) approach in project management is gaining popularity, its implementation remains limited. The literature primarily focused on specific project types, such as construction projects, while neglecting others that involve multiple stakeholders and relationships, such as innovation, R&D, IT, space, and agricultural projects. Moreover, the study identified that SNT is predominantly used in three knowledge areas, namely, risk management, stakeholder management, and knowledge management. Implications: Understanding the SNT approach in project management can help project managers create more effective teams, improve stakeholder engagement, foster collaboration and innovation, and mitigate project risks. Limitations: This study is limited to Web of Science database. Future research may extend our efforts by digging into more databases.

Measuring the Impact of The HR Information System on Performance in The Context of Delone& McLean Success Model
    (Başkent Üniversitesi, 2023-03-26) Kale,Didem; Kalemci Tüzün,İpek
Purpose: The current research aim is to understand the effectiveness of information systems used in human resources management (HRM) activities on perceived organizational performance. Methodology: In this study, the Delone & McLean Information Systems Success Model is used for measuring the success of human resources information systems, which is one of the most widely used for information systems success measurement. In order to examine study purposes, this research employed a survey design. The obtained data are evaluated through SPSS and AMOS statistical package programs. Findings: The study's findings support the claim that, according to Delone and McLean success model, the use of HRIS is largely driven by information quality and HRIS utilization, with information quality also having an impact on organizational performance. Implications: Based on the mentioned success model, only a service quality parameter has a significant impact on user satisfaction whereas no significant and positive effects of information and system quality on user satisfaction are observed. For the effects of user satisfaction on perceived organizational performance, no significant impact has been identified. Finally, the content of HRIS significantly influenced perceived organizational performance. Limitations: Any generalization from the findings of this study should be done with caution because of the limitations imposed by the nature of the sampled subjects and country. Future research should extend our efforts by considering specific areas of HRIS with other causal variables, additional populations, and additional methods.

Gold and Stock Market Linkage: Pre- and Post-Covid-19 Periods
    (Başkent Üniversitesi, 2022-10-12) Canbaloğlu,Bilge
Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between gold and stock market returns of Borsa Istanbul for the year 2000-2021. This time period is seperated into two subsamples as pre-Covid-19 and post-Covid-19 periods in order to see whether the relationship between gold and stock prices are affected by the Covid-19 disease or not. Methodology: The ordinary least square method is utilized for the analyses. The interaction term of credit default swap premiums with stock market returns is also included into baseline model in order to observe effects of stress in the financial markets on this link. Findings: The empirical results mainly show that there exists a negative and significant relationship between gold and market returns in Turkey for both pre- and post-Covid-19 periods. On the other hand, the interaction term is found to be negative and significant for pre-Covid19 period, which indicates that an decrease in the stock market returns during the times of economic stress lead to an increase in the gold prices before the Covid-19. However, the interaction term is found to be significant and positive for the post-Covid-19 period, which points out that when economic stress upsurge in the pandemic period, a decline in the stock market does not lead to a rise in the gold prices. Implications: The gold is regarded as safe haven and a hedge tool against equity market investments before the Covid-19 period in difficult times of economy. However, this property of gold as a hedge instrument to be used in diversifying portfolios cannot be valid for the period aftermath of the Covid-19.

A Study on Employment in Non-Life Insurance Companies: Fuzzy Regression Example
(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2022-12-12) Akgül ,Yusuf; Çamlıbel,Fuat; Şengönül , Ahmet
Purpose: In this study, factors affecting employment in non - life insurance companies were examined. These factors are the financial variables of insurance companies, including financial profit-loss, total net premiums, total assets and technical profit-loss. Methodology: Fuzzy regression method was used as the solution method. Findings: According to the results, the change interval of the financial variables was found significant at h = 09. As a result, the change interval in total assets was % 0.0906, the financial profit was nearly “0”, technical profit/loss was % 0.0392 and the sum of premiums was % 62,04. Also, real employment data was found to be closer to the upper regression limit. Implications: The results obtained by the fuzzy regression method are quite better from the panel data solution method in terms of the consistency of the estimates. When it is desired to generate prediction models for the employment with financial variables of the companies in the sector, the fuzzy regression method is good at creating meaningful models and gives more consistent information about the coefficient of the related arguments. If the results of the study will be interpreted economically and socially; it was observed how internal variables, which are thought to affect the employment capacity of insurance companies, affect employment in insurance companies. It is observed that the increase in the size of premium gain in insurance companies has a positive effect on its employment. This effect will have positive effects on creating new employment in the insurance sector. This increase in employment will also have positive effects for the country's economy. Limitations: However, developing technology and making many insurance transactions online will cause companies to decrease their employment capacity even if their premium gain size increases. For example, there will be a decrease in needed field sales staff and number of agencies. In this case, on the contrary, it will increase the number of unemployed people in insurance sector and in the country. The decrease in employment and increasing unemployment will affect both people and the country's economy negatively. Economically, a negative outlook will occur in the domestic and foreign markets.
