    Association of Vitamin D Deficiency with Muscle Strength and Quality Of Life in Postmenopausal Women

    Aim The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of vitamin D deficiency on muscle strength and quality of life in postmenopausal women. Methods Self-sufficient, community-dwelling, postmenopausal women over 55 years old attending the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation outpatient clinic were included in the study. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml were accepted as indicative of vitamin D deficiency. A computerized isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex 770 Norm, Lumex Inc., Ronkonkoma, NY, USA) was used for testing knee extensor muscle strength. Results Forty-nine postmenopausal women with median age 64.3 years (interquartile range 59.0-69.5 years) were included in the study. Vitamin D deficiency was detected in 49% of the participants. There was no relation between vitamin D deficiency and knee muscle strength in both right and left legs. Vitamin D deficiency was found not to be associated with any of the domains of SF-36. Conclusions Vitamin D deficiency is not related to decreased muscle strength and lowered quality of life in postmenopausal women. Other factors rather than vitamin D deficiency should be investigated for illuminating the causalities of these two common clinical conditions.

    Comparison of mandibular index values determined from standard panoramic versus cone beam computed tomography reconstructed images

    Objective. The aim of this study was to compare mandibular index values, including the mandibular cortical index (MCI), mental index (MI), and panoramic mandibular index (PMI), determined on the basis of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic reconstructed (PR) images. Study Design. PR and CBCT images of 182 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Cross-sectional (CS) and PR images were obtained from CBCT data. The MCI, MI, and PMI were assessed on CS, PR, and panoramic images and evaluated for intra- and interobserver agreements by kappa-value or intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis. Agreement among measurement methods was assessed by using the Bland-Altman method, with CS images as the gold standard for linear measurements. Results. Measurements from PR and CS images agreed with those from panoramic images in 66.7% and 53.8% of C3 classifications of MCI (porous cortices forming many endosteal residues), respectively. Panoramic and CBCT images exhibited good agreement in MI findings (ICC 0.91) and moderate (PR and panoramic images: ICC 0.79) to good (CS and panoramic images: ICC 0.87) agreement in PMI findings. Conclusions. Because of the overlapping of buccal and lingual cortices, panoramic images are especially inadequate for determining the C3 category of MCI. However, CS images obtained from available CBCT data provide better visibility compared with panoramic images and, therefore, can be used for evaluating mandibular indices.

    Platelet/lymphocyte ratio is an independent predictor for osteoporosis

    Objectives: To investigate the intercourse between the platelet/lymphocyte (P/L) and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (N/L), and vitamin D (Vit-D) levels in low bone mineral density (BMD) of women. Methods: Two hundred fifty-two postmenopausal female outpatients who were admitted to the obstetrics and gynecology and physical therapy clinics between July 2016 and December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were grouped in relation to their T-score (normal [n=92], osteopenia [n=112], and PMO [n=48]). The serum levels of P/L, N/L, Vit-D, BMD and complete blood count of the patients were retrospectively examined. Results: The median P/L was significantly higher and Vit-D levels were significantly lower in the PMO group (130.75 [52.89-385] versus 123.05 [54-232.5], p=0.02 and 15.4 [4-34] versus 20.1 [4-47], p=0.003). While BMD and P/L were negatively correlated, a positive correlation between BMD and Vit-D was found. Vitamin D levels were negatively correlated with P/L (p<0.001) and N/L (p=0.04). Older age (>= 65 years), Vit-D deficiency and P/L values >125.06 were found as independent prognostic factors for PMO in regression analysis. Conclusion: Higher P/L seems to be a quite simple marker to help predict postmenopausal PMO. As seen in our study, having low levels of Vit-D is crucial for PMO.
