Item Ageism During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Discussion and Recommendations(2021) Madran, H. Andac DemirtasThe spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) was labeled a "pandemic" by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. It has caused not only health-related issues but also economic, educational, psychological, and social problems. Further, discrimination associated with the pandemic has been observed around the globe. Besides the obvious negative consequences faced by the individuals targeted, pandemic-related discrimination has affected the spread of the virus by influencing public attitudes toward disease prevention and the restrictions imposed by authorities. Discrimination toward foreigners, minorities, and certain religious groups (e.g., Muslims) increased during this period. Additionally, the pandemic saw ageism spread rapidly to become more visible than ever. Acknowledging that Covid-19 poses a higher risk for individuals over a certain age, several countries implemented restrictions specific to those age groups. However, this practice resulted in the emergence of problems that were not considered initially, especially the escalation of ageism. This study examines ageism during the Covid-19 pandemic based on major theories and current research. First, discrimination and ageism are defined in detail. Then, pandemic-related ageism is discussed within the framework of basic theoretical approaches. Finally, recommendations for preventing ageism related to the pandemic and in general are presented.Item Alan, Zaman, Kurallar ve Amaç Çerçevesinde Oyunun Neliği Üzerine(1997) Aygün Cengiz, SerpilItem Arf Numerical Semigroups With Prime Multiplicity(2022) Karakas, Halil Ibrahim; AAY-4394-2021In the literature, parametrizations are given for Arf numerical semigroups with small multiplicity and arbitrary conductor. From those parametrizations, formulas are obtained for the number of such Arf numerical semigroups. These formulas show that the number of Arf numerical semigroups with multiplicity 3, 5 or 7 and arbitrary conductor depends only on the congruence class of the conductor modulo the multiplicity. In a recent work with S. Ilhan and M. Suer, observing that the same is true for Arf numerical semigroups with multiplicity 11 and 13, we asked if that was true for Arf numerical semigroups with arbitrary prime multiplicity. In the present work this question is answered affirmatively.Item Assessment of Hemoglobin Stability in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients Receiving Erythropoietin Therapy and the Effect of Hemoglobin Stability on Risk of Cardiovascular Disease(2019) Guncan, Melda Ulas; Guncan, Sabri; Torun, DilekObjective: Anemia is one of the most important factors that decrease the quality of life in patients with end-stage renal desease receiving hemodialysis treatment. In these patients, Erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESAs) are used in the treatment of anemia. Although the target hemoglobin (Hb) value in chronic renal failure is 11-12 gr/dL, it is suggested that hemoglobin values fluctuate between normal, high and low values in the great majority, leading to cardiovascular structural changes which increase mortality. In this study, we investigated the effect of anemia and hemoglobin fluctuations on mortality rate and the risk of cardiovascular disease in chronic hemodialysis patients who received ESA thearapy. Materials and Methods: Hemoglobin values for 12 months of 181 patients were examined. The target Hb level was 11-12 gr/dL interval and the patients were divided into 6 groups according to the hemoglobin values; persistently low, low-normal, target, normal-high, low-high and persistently high. According to the variability in hemoglobin level, groups were compared in terms of demographic, laboratory characteristics, treatment, risk of cardiovascular disease, hospitalization and death frequency and causes. Result: The total of 181 patients were classified according to Hb levels; 22 (12.2%) patients were persistently-low, 72 (39.8%) were low-normal, 10 (5.5%) were normal-high and 77 (42.5%) patients were low-high Hb group. During the 12 month fallow up, there were no patients in target and high Hb group. The groups were similar in terms of the presence of comorbid diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and other demographic characteristics, and there was no difference between groups in terms of cardiovascular disease development. ESA doses and blood transfusion counts and mortality rates were significantly higher in the persistently-low hemoglobin group compared to the other groups. Conclusion: In our study, high rate of anemia and hemoglobin fluctuations were shown in chronic hemodialysis patients and anemia was associated with mortality. However, the possible association of these variables with cardiovascular diseases was not observed. Further studies are needed in the larger hemodialysis patient group to investigate the relationship between hemoglobin fluctuation and mortality and cardiovascular risk.Item Attitudes and Behaviors About Fake News: A Case Study in Three Universities(2020) Onursoy, Sibel; Turan, Erdem Alper; Yesilyurt, Segah; Astam, Fatma KubraLack of legal regulations and difficulties in enforcement, supporting the easy manipulation and provocation of the masses are among the major disadvantages of social media. Users can the opportunity to send information, photos, videos and narratives about the news events that they witness firsthand through their social media accounts. The malicious use of private and corporate accounts, which had the opportunity to spread the fake information and content quickly, caused their social networks to have a negative reputation for hosting fake news. The news or information process that develops without discipline can naturally cause different effects and confusion. Therefore, the manipulative effect of fake news or information and the evaluation of the impact processes are of great importance. The purpose of this study is to explain the evaluation of fake news of individuals who may be exposed to fake news, to determine decision and impact processes, attitudes and behaviors in dealing with false news. This research is a descriptive field research using a quantitative research method. Survey is preferred as the data collection technique. Within the scope of the study a questionnaire was applied to 230 students studying at three universities in Ankara, Samsun and Eskisehir on a voluntary basis. The stratified sampling method, which is a probabilistic sampling method, was used in sample determination. In order to reveal the attitude and behavior patterns against fake news, the age range and gender variables of the sample representing the formal student population of three universities were taken into consideration. A questionnaire consisting of the use of media, the process of encountering fake news, the decision process of believing / not believing in the news, and verification is applied. As a result of the research, it was revealed that this sample found the visual content more convincing, false news with propaganda and guiding features was common, and it was common in magazine, politics and economy news types.Item Deviant Employee Behavior in The Eyes of Colleagues: The Role of Organizational Support and Self-Efficacy(2017) Tuzun, Ipek Kalemci; Cetin, Fatih; Basim, H. Nejat; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6979-2040; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2605-9962; ABB-5350-2020; ABD-9381-2021The present study investigates the influences of multifocal organizational support in the context of deviant employee behavior by examining the potential associations with employees' self-efficacy characteristics. The study proposes that perceived multifocal support and self-efficacy have a direct relationship with deviant behavior, and that these two variables interact in their relationship with deviant workplace behavior. Using self- and peer-reported data from 225 academics, hypothesized relationships were investigated using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that two different forms of support (organizational and supervisory) strongly influenced two different forms of deviant behavior (organizational and interpersonal). Whereas perceived organizational support decreases organizationally relevant deviant behavior, supervisory support decreases deviant behavior toward colleagues. The results also showed that high self-efficacy moderates both the negative relationship between organizational support and deviant behavior toward the organization and that between supervisory support and deviant behavior toward colleagues. The study also discusses the implications of these findings for managers, along with recommendations for future research.Item The Effect of Transformation in Turkey - Syrian Relations on News Discourse(2016) Dundar, LaleOne of the most debated issues in journalism studies is the objectivity of the news texts. Even though the journalists argue that they are objective, every single word used in a news text may refer to some other meanings which can create a subjective point of view. How to define or how to name a person, an institution, an organization or a geographical place in a news text, not only presents a point of view, but also strengthens the idea of "objectivity is impossible". Turkish media is also taking position inevitably, by choosing different definitions in news texts. The crisis in international relations, domestic politics or social circumstances may have affect on how to define the people, institutions or geographical places in news texts. Some of the terminologies appeared in the news texts have been transformed during and after the radical break of the relations of Turkey and Syria in 2011. It is observed that the terminologies of news texts were transformed with the suggestions and calls of the members of the political power. This study investigates the preferred terminologies in the news texts of the state owned media institutions in Turkey, as well as the main stream media institutions and the ideologically positioned media institutions. The study focuses on the transformation of the terminologies from Esad to Esed, from ISID to DAES and from Kobani to Ayn el Arab. Mobbing as interpersonal violence has been newly defined and been taken to court although it has not been a new phenomenon. Mobbing is a persistent and systematic harassment which can be observed during communication situations. Mobbing can occur in different ways and it causes incalculable economic and psychological harm for both the targeted worker and the employer. People those who witness mobbing should ethically intervene and the employer should provide a safe, respectful work environment for all employees ana also mobbed people should get support from his/her relatives, employer, law people, other mobbed persons and mental health professionals who will help him/her to struggle with mobbing more powerfully.Item Kül Tegin ve Bilge Kağan Yazıtlarında Kadın Üzerine Bir İnceleme(,Kültür Dergisi ,103 ,58-61, 1994) Aygün, SerpilItem The Link Between Supervisor Support, Servicing Efficacy And Job Satisfaction Among Frontline Hotel Employees: An Investigation In Turkey(2023) Oksuz, Merve; Tosyali, Hikmet; Tosyali, Furkan; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2470-7919Purpose This paper aims to examine the association between supervisor support, servicing efficacy and job satisfaction among frontline hotel employees in Turkey. Specifically, the mediating role of servicing efficacy was examined in the link between supervisor support and job satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 421 frontline employees in 4- and 5-star hotels located in the South and South West of Turkey. The authors proposed a conceptual model in which servicing efficacy mediates the link between supervisor support and job satisfaction after controlling for demographic information. Data were analyzed through the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. Findings Results showed that supervisor support positively predicted servicing efficacy and job satisfaction reports of the employees. Those reporting higher servicing efficacy were more likely to report increased job satisfaction. In addition, servicing efficacy partially mediated the link between supervisor support and job satisfaction. Originality/value The current study provides new evidence on the link between supervisor support, efficacy beliefs and job satisfaction in the hotel industry. This is the first study investigating the mediating role of servicing efficacy in the association between supervisor support and job satisfaction. Moreover, most previous studies separately focusing on supervisor support, efficacy beliefs and job satisfaction in the hospitality industry were conducted in developed, Western countries. In contrast, research examining work-related constructs and outcomes in Turkey's hospitality industry has been limited. Thus, both replicated and original findings would contribute to the generalizability of cumulative knowledge in tourism and hospitality.Item Making Grandfather Come Out Better Portraits of Ancestors and Digital Manipulation in Contemporary Turkey(2015) Aytemiz, Pelin; 0000-0002-1420-7040; AFE-8592-2022In contemporary Turkey, a growing number of lower to middle-income families bring old and often damaged photographs of their deceased family members to digital studios for restoration. Digital restoration artists, whether working online or from photography studios, retouch these photographs in often highly creative ways, such as adding color and fantasy backgrounds, or combining discrete portraits into fictional (diachronic) family portraits. Digital technologies such as the Photoshop program are here called upon to perform a very old desire: that of ensuring a dead person's continued presence. Engaging with debates on the passage from analog to digital and the relationship of photography to death, I examine this process from two perspectives. First, I focus on digital artists who understand their work in professional terms as intensely material, and in social terms as one of 'saving photographs from death'; second, I examine the renewed social potency that such digitally remastered photographs acquire in Turkish homes, where digital intervention not only ensures the continued potency of ancestral photographs in ensuring the presence of the deceased patriarch, but also enhances this presence in novel ways. Digitally remastered photographs are understood here as more than 'just' photo-realistic. They are 'more perfect' or even 'more real': their fictionality adds to their auratic character as icons of authority and makes them eminently suited for the renewed kind of social work that is demanded of them.Item The Mediating Role of Organisational Cynicism on the Relationship Between Technostress and Job Performance: A Research on Teachers(2022) Yalcin, Rukiye Can; Gokmen, Yunus; Erdem, Haluk; Turen, UfukThis study's primary purpose is to examine organisational cynicism's mediating role in the relationship between technostress and job performance. Data are obtained from 234 teachers working in public and private schools in Turkey. In the study, correlation and regression analyses have been performed to determine the relationships and effects between variables, and the structural equation model has been used to verify the scales of the variables. In addition, the mediation role in the study has been examined with the bootstrap test in the Process module. Findings show that the validity and reliability of the scales are ensured by the results of commonly used validity and reliability analysis methods. Additionally, technostress and organisational cynicism decrease job performance and technostress significantly increase organisational cynicism. Further mediation analysis reveals that organisational cynicism partially mediates the relationship between technostress and job performance.Item Negotiation Ethics A Cultural Perspective from Turkey(2018) Sigri, Unsal; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8870-7398; ADV-8340-2022Item New Media and Political Participation: 15 July Case(2018) Dundar, LaleNew Media; has been described as one of the means that has strengthened democracy in recent years in terms of facilitating the interactions in many local, national and international social and political events and facilitating the political participation of the communities. Compared with traditional media platforms, it is also observed that the new media, which facilitates and accelerates the political participation of citizens, has changed social behavior patterns accordingly. While the traditional media in Turkish political history are mainly used as legitimation of coups and as a means of digesting the society, it can be said that the new media had the opposite function in 15 July case. This study examines the role of new media in the social response and political participation during the coup attempt process of 15 July 2016 and examines the effect of new media platforms on the change in social behavior patterns through the example of July 15.Item The Possible Effects of National Culture Dimensions on Sustainable Child Development Index: A Cross-Country Analysis of Countries(2022) Fayganoglu, Pinar; Gokmen, Yunus; Can Yalcin, Rukiye; Begenirbas, MemduhHousehold income, which is one of the most important measures of a country's economic state, does not indicate that children live in better circumstances. In the related literature, children are placed at the center of a country's sustainability assessments and created the Sustainable Child Development Index (SCDI), which displays a country's sustainable child development scores in terms of health, education, safety, economic conditions, and environmental factors. Taking into consideration the issues about children and SCDI, this study is to reveal the effects of Hofstede's cultural structures/dimensions on SCDI scores by analyzing a cross-sectional data set of 81 countries with logarithmic multiple regression as an explanatory model. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that power distance and masculinity had a significant and negative effect on SCDI, and long-term orientation had a significant and positive effect on SCDI. For future studies, this study can be beneficial to see the longitudinal differences for the countries covered in this study.Item Protective Motivators and Precautionary Behaviors Against COVID-19 in Turkey(2023) Turen, Ufuk; Gokmen, Yunus; Erdem, Haluk; Kalkin, Gokdeniz; 35394534In this research, we investigated the protection motivators and precautionary behaviors against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the associations between them. To do this, we developed two original scales, collected data (2783 responses) using an online survey, after removing the responses (319), which were filled in incompletely or incorrectly in the questionnaire, we obtained 2464 participants covering the aged 18+ population in Turkey. Based on random sampling, our sample complies with these ratios and generally reflects the aged 18+ population of Turkey. We confirmed the psychometrical validity and reliability of our two scales using the collected data. Herewith, we found that perceived susceptibility of COVID-19 infection is very high, perceived severity of COVID-19 is medium, COVID-19 related information seeking is high, beliefs on precautions' efficacy is high and also the practice of precautionary behaviors is high. Our research depicts that all protection motivators significantly are related with the practice of precautionary behaviors (routine and leisure). However, with the only exception of perceived severity of COVID-19 is not related with precautionary behaviors (routine). Besides, we saw that females' average in all variables is significantly higher than males and some variables are sensitive to age, education level, marital status and the number of children. We believe that the findings provide essential inputs for authorities in establishing public health policies against the present pandemic and likely ones in the future.Item A Qualitative Study On The Communicative Needs, Expectations And Experiences During Covid-19 Pandemic: 65 Years And Over Ankara Sample(2021) Kilic, Nilufer Pinar; Ozdemir, B. Pinar; Hizal, G. Senem Gencturk; Aktas, MelikeThis study examines the high-risk group of individuals age 65 and over who most frequently experience the negative consequences of Covid-19. We review their communicative needs and expectations, knowledge and information sources, and risk information and knowledge patterns. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 47 people aged 65 and over residing in Ankara. We evaluated our results in the context of The Social Amplification of Risk Framework, considering the major communication stations disseminating risk information. We found that during the Covid-19 pandemic, individuals aged 65 and over accessed risk information through new media and traditional media, and interpersonal communication, especially with close family and children, served as a primary information source during the pandemic. The trust factor, particularly regarding medical expertise, was an essential criterion in evaluating information. The communicative needs and expectations changed for this high-risk group. The need for improved digital communication capabilities become apparent during the pandemic crisis. Suggestions that consider public perspectives and risk perceptions while incorporating the relationship between risks and communication processes may contribute to structuring impactful risk communication activities.Item The Relationship Between Agression and Online Video Game Addiction: A Study on Massively Multiplayer Online Video Game Players(2014) Madran, H. Andac Demirtas; Cakilci, Eda Ferligul; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5582-2608; AAC-1925-2020Objective: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between aggression and online video game addiction scores of massively multiplayer online video game players. Methods: Study included 205 participants who are playing massively multiplayer online video games more than 12 months. Mean age of the participant was 18+/-40. Data were collected via a personal information form consisting of questions about participants. demographical background, Turkish version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Scale and Internet Addiction Scale. Correlation, t-test and stepwise regression analyses conducted to analyze the data. Results: Analysis indicated that there was a significantly high correlation between agression scores and video game addiction scores. Males have significantly higher psysical aggression scores than females. Age was negatively correlated with total aggression scores and all the subscale scores of Buss-Perry Agression Questionnaire (psyhical aggression, anger, verbal aggression and hostility). There was a negative correlation between age and video game addiction scores. Two subscales (isolation, loss of control) of the addiction scale predicted agression scores. Conclusion: The present study revealed that there was a significant correlation between agression and online video game addiction. On the other hand, age was negatively correlated with aggression and video game addiction scores of the participants.Item Reliability and Validity Studies of Turkish Version of Extended Personal Attributes Questionnaire(2016) Demirtas-Madran, H. AndacObjective: The aim of the present study was to develop and assess validity and reliability of the Turkish Version of Extended Personal Attributes Questionnaire. Methods: A Turkish version of the questionnaire was translated from English by a bilingual person, and then independently translated back to English items by another bilingual individual. The sample consisted of 340 university students from different universities in Ankara, Turkey. In order to determine criterion validity of the scale, its correlation with the Turkish Version of Bem Sex Role Inventory was examined. Results: For determining the reliability of the scale, internal consistency and test-retest methods were used. Criterion validity of the scale and sex differences were examined. Conclusions: This study supports the six-factor model of the Turkish Version of Extended Personal Attributes Questionnaire indicated by the original study.
