Item Accepting Restrictions and Compliance With Recommended Preventive Behaviors for COVID-19: A Discussion Based on the Key Approaches and Current Research on Fear Appeals(2021) Demirtas Madran, H. Andac; 0000-0002-3444-8845; 34163389COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) is a novel coronavirus which was first detected in late December 2019 in the Wuhan Province of China. This novel coronavirus, caused by a zoonotic beta-coronavirus (SARS-CoV-), is described as highly infectious. The World Health Organization (WHO) named the novel coronavirus as COVID-19 on February 11, 2020, and declared it as a "pandemic." Almost all countries have undertaken wide-scale precautions so as to prevent or limit the spread of the virus, with most having practiced some form of "lockdown" along with "social distancing," as well as dispensed recommendations for proper hand washing, avoiding touching the face, wearing facemasks, and using disposable tissues when either coughing or sneezing. Whereas it is well known that slowing the spread of this new epidemic requires the cooperation of all citizens, some people still seem to willfully disregard the rules and guidelines, and thereby ignore the health risks posed to both themselves and to others they come into contact with. People have responded differently to lockdown rules and social distancing practices. Whilst the majority follow the rules and recommendations with great care, others are more lax or simply refuse to comply. These differences might be accounted for according to a number of factors including personal, social, cultural, mental, and economic variables. Being persuaded to comply with preventive rules, especially those concerned with health-related behaviors, also bring certain other factors into play. Fear is one of those factors, and is one of the most powerful. It is well known that fear-based appeals can be effective in inculcating health behaviors, with many theories having been developed in this area. However, both the content of the message (the level of the fear it contains) and certain personal variables can determine the persuasive power of the fear appeal. It can even have an adverse effect if not properly applied. Many theories have been developed to address the persuasive effectiveness of the fear appeal (e.g., fear-drive theory, protection-motivation theory), and this study aims to discuss these individual differences in precautionary and preventive measures for the COVID-19 pandemic within the framework of the basic assumptions of these theoretical approaches.Item Adapting the Socio-Cultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS-R) to Arabic: A Study on The Syrian Migrants Living in Gaziantep Province of Turkiye(2023) Keser, Ahmet; Yalcin, Onder; Gokmen, Yunus; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6107-0577; HZK-3170-2023This study aims to investigate the validity, reliability, and Arabic language equivalence of the Socio-cultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS-R) created by Colleen Ward and Antony Kennedy (1999) and revised by Jessie Wilson (2013). A sample group of 424 Syrian Migrants (18 years and older) living in Gaziantep province of Turkiye from different neighborhoods, economic status, and socio-demographic backgrounds are included in the research, and the scale is examined via commonly used validity and reliability analysis methods. It is obtained that the Cronbach's Alpha of the items is higher than 0.7 and the corrected item-total correlations are above the threshold value (0.2) in item analysis, nearly 69% of the total variance is explained by 5 factors in Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and the Goodness of Fit Indexes (chi 2/sd = 1.521, CFI = 0.958, and SRMR = 0.048) are within the good/acceptable range in Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). It has been understood that the SCAS-R is a valid and reliable scale for Arabic culture. The results of this study may provide a valuable tool for policymakers, researchers, and humanitarian workers studying migration issues.Item Ageism During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Discussion and Recommendations(2021) Madran, H. Andac DemirtasThe spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) was labeled a "pandemic" by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. It has caused not only health-related issues but also economic, educational, psychological, and social problems. Further, discrimination associated with the pandemic has been observed around the globe. Besides the obvious negative consequences faced by the individuals targeted, pandemic-related discrimination has affected the spread of the virus by influencing public attitudes toward disease prevention and the restrictions imposed by authorities. Discrimination toward foreigners, minorities, and certain religious groups (e.g., Muslims) increased during this period. Additionally, the pandemic saw ageism spread rapidly to become more visible than ever. Acknowledging that Covid-19 poses a higher risk for individuals over a certain age, several countries implemented restrictions specific to those age groups. However, this practice resulted in the emergence of problems that were not considered initially, especially the escalation of ageism. This study examines ageism during the Covid-19 pandemic based on major theories and current research. First, discrimination and ageism are defined in detail. Then, pandemic-related ageism is discussed within the framework of basic theoretical approaches. Finally, recommendations for preventing ageism related to the pandemic and in general are presented.Item Alan, Zaman, Kurallar ve Amaç Çerçevesinde Oyunun Neliği Üzerine(1997) Aygün Cengiz, SerpilItem Arf Numerical Semigroups With Prime Multiplicity(2022) Karakas, Halil Ibrahim; AAY-4394-2021In the literature, parametrizations are given for Arf numerical semigroups with small multiplicity and arbitrary conductor. From those parametrizations, formulas are obtained for the number of such Arf numerical semigroups. These formulas show that the number of Arf numerical semigroups with multiplicity 3, 5 or 7 and arbitrary conductor depends only on the congruence class of the conductor modulo the multiplicity. In a recent work with S. Ilhan and M. Suer, observing that the same is true for Arf numerical semigroups with multiplicity 11 and 13, we asked if that was true for Arf numerical semigroups with arbitrary prime multiplicity. In the present work this question is answered affirmatively.Item Assessment of Hemoglobin Stability in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients Receiving Erythropoietin Therapy and the Effect of Hemoglobin Stability on Risk of Cardiovascular Disease(2019) Guncan, Melda Ulas; Guncan, Sabri; Torun, DilekObjective: Anemia is one of the most important factors that decrease the quality of life in patients with end-stage renal desease receiving hemodialysis treatment. In these patients, Erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESAs) are used in the treatment of anemia. Although the target hemoglobin (Hb) value in chronic renal failure is 11-12 gr/dL, it is suggested that hemoglobin values fluctuate between normal, high and low values in the great majority, leading to cardiovascular structural changes which increase mortality. In this study, we investigated the effect of anemia and hemoglobin fluctuations on mortality rate and the risk of cardiovascular disease in chronic hemodialysis patients who received ESA thearapy. Materials and Methods: Hemoglobin values for 12 months of 181 patients were examined. The target Hb level was 11-12 gr/dL interval and the patients were divided into 6 groups according to the hemoglobin values; persistently low, low-normal, target, normal-high, low-high and persistently high. According to the variability in hemoglobin level, groups were compared in terms of demographic, laboratory characteristics, treatment, risk of cardiovascular disease, hospitalization and death frequency and causes. Result: The total of 181 patients were classified according to Hb levels; 22 (12.2%) patients were persistently-low, 72 (39.8%) were low-normal, 10 (5.5%) were normal-high and 77 (42.5%) patients were low-high Hb group. During the 12 month fallow up, there were no patients in target and high Hb group. The groups were similar in terms of the presence of comorbid diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and other demographic characteristics, and there was no difference between groups in terms of cardiovascular disease development. ESA doses and blood transfusion counts and mortality rates were significantly higher in the persistently-low hemoglobin group compared to the other groups. Conclusion: In our study, high rate of anemia and hemoglobin fluctuations were shown in chronic hemodialysis patients and anemia was associated with mortality. However, the possible association of these variables with cardiovascular diseases was not observed. Further studies are needed in the larger hemodialysis patient group to investigate the relationship between hemoglobin fluctuation and mortality and cardiovascular risk.Item Attitudes and Behaviors About Fake News: A Case Study in Three Universities(2020) Onursoy, Sibel; Turan, Erdem Alper; Yesilyurt, Segah; Astam, Fatma KubraLack of legal regulations and difficulties in enforcement, supporting the easy manipulation and provocation of the masses are among the major disadvantages of social media. Users can the opportunity to send information, photos, videos and narratives about the news events that they witness firsthand through their social media accounts. The malicious use of private and corporate accounts, which had the opportunity to spread the fake information and content quickly, caused their social networks to have a negative reputation for hosting fake news. The news or information process that develops without discipline can naturally cause different effects and confusion. Therefore, the manipulative effect of fake news or information and the evaluation of the impact processes are of great importance. The purpose of this study is to explain the evaluation of fake news of individuals who may be exposed to fake news, to determine decision and impact processes, attitudes and behaviors in dealing with false news. This research is a descriptive field research using a quantitative research method. Survey is preferred as the data collection technique. Within the scope of the study a questionnaire was applied to 230 students studying at three universities in Ankara, Samsun and Eskisehir on a voluntary basis. The stratified sampling method, which is a probabilistic sampling method, was used in sample determination. In order to reveal the attitude and behavior patterns against fake news, the age range and gender variables of the sample representing the formal student population of three universities were taken into consideration. A questionnaire consisting of the use of media, the process of encountering fake news, the decision process of believing / not believing in the news, and verification is applied. As a result of the research, it was revealed that this sample found the visual content more convincing, false news with propaganda and guiding features was common, and it was common in magazine, politics and economy news types.Item A Case Study on Web-Based Information System Evaluation(2014) Tokdemir, Gul; Bilgen, Semih; Ercil, YavuzA new framework is proposed to assess web-based information systems (WISs) which is domain-independent, that is, can be applied for profit seeking as well as service oriented or non-profit seeking organizations. Assessment starts from an identification of the critical success factors (CSF) that outline organizational strategies, and proceeds to determine the measures of three categories of relationships: User-WIS, Other systems-WIS, Organization-WIS. These measures and CSF's are evaluated collectively to arrive at an effectiveness measure. A case study illustrating the applicability of the assessment framework in the e-business domain is presented.Item Deviant Employee Behavior in The Eyes of Colleagues: The Role of Organizational Support and Self-Efficacy(2017) Tuzun, Ipek Kalemci; Cetin, Fatih; Basim, H. Nejat; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6979-2040; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2605-9962; ABB-5350-2020; ABD-9381-2021The present study investigates the influences of multifocal organizational support in the context of deviant employee behavior by examining the potential associations with employees' self-efficacy characteristics. The study proposes that perceived multifocal support and self-efficacy have a direct relationship with deviant behavior, and that these two variables interact in their relationship with deviant workplace behavior. Using self- and peer-reported data from 225 academics, hypothesized relationships were investigated using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that two different forms of support (organizational and supervisory) strongly influenced two different forms of deviant behavior (organizational and interpersonal). Whereas perceived organizational support decreases organizationally relevant deviant behavior, supervisory support decreases deviant behavior toward colleagues. The results also showed that high self-efficacy moderates both the negative relationship between organizational support and deviant behavior toward the organization and that between supervisory support and deviant behavior toward colleagues. The study also discusses the implications of these findings for managers, along with recommendations for future research.Item Does Robot-assisted Surgery in Urology Has Benefits? The Current Status(2019) Sah, Cem; Kuzgunbay, Baris; 0000-0001-5598-4666Minimally invasive surgery has gradually replaced the conventional surgery with the introduction of laparoscopy. Subsequently, with intensive advertisement and marketing strategies, robot-assisted surgery became popular and robot-assisted surgery has been used in almost every surgical procedure. Despite its high cost, the robotic platform, which has proven its general advantages such as less hospital stay and less blood loss, has become controversial in the literature in terms of cost effectiveness. In this study, the advantages and disadvantages of the robot-assisted surgery in urology have been reviewed in the light of current literature.Item The Effect of Transformation in Turkey - Syrian Relations on News Discourse(2016) Dundar, LaleOne of the most debated issues in journalism studies is the objectivity of the news texts. Even though the journalists argue that they are objective, every single word used in a news text may refer to some other meanings which can create a subjective point of view. How to define or how to name a person, an institution, an organization or a geographical place in a news text, not only presents a point of view, but also strengthens the idea of "objectivity is impossible". Turkish media is also taking position inevitably, by choosing different definitions in news texts. The crisis in international relations, domestic politics or social circumstances may have affect on how to define the people, institutions or geographical places in news texts. Some of the terminologies appeared in the news texts have been transformed during and after the radical break of the relations of Turkey and Syria in 2011. It is observed that the terminologies of news texts were transformed with the suggestions and calls of the members of the political power. This study investigates the preferred terminologies in the news texts of the state owned media institutions in Turkey, as well as the main stream media institutions and the ideologically positioned media institutions. The study focuses on the transformation of the terminologies from Esad to Esed, from ISID to DAES and from Kobani to Ayn el Arab. ‘Empathy’ as understanding the other’s situation or feelings for Sigmund Freud became very important in the field of psychotherapy for also Sândor Ferenczi ve Heinz Kohut. The concept of empathy, which comes to todays through contributions of Carl Rogers, means to put himself/herself in place of other and to transmit the other’s feelings and thoughts truly by comprehending and perceiving him/her. With these aspects, the ability to make empathy is an essential component of emotional literacy which is an inportant skill capacity of emotional intelligence becomes much more important in online therapy since the absence of the visual clues such as the voice tone and body language of the patient forces the online therapist to have more emotional intelligence than the traditional therapist.Item Exploring the Motivation Behind Discrimination and Stigmatization Related to COVID-19: A Social Psychological Discussion Based on the Main Theoretical Explanations(2020) Demirtas-Madran, H. Andac; 0000-0001-5582-2608; 33281671; AAC-1925-2020The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), was first detected in Wuhan province in China during late December 2019 and was designated as being highly infectious. The World Health Organization (WHO) labeled it a "pandemic" on March 11, 2020. Throughout human history, experience has shown that prejudices and viruses spread simultaneously during a viral pandemic. Outgroup members have been associated with various diseases and non-human vectors of diseases. Some epidemics have been named according to various outgroups, just as the novel coronavirus has been referred to by some as the "Wuhan virus" or the "Chinese virus." Associating a virus with a sociodemographic group builds a false illusionary correlation, which can lead to stigmatization and discrimination. Pandemics can also stimulate violent xenophobic reactions. Besides the obvious harmful consequences for the individuals targeted, pandemic-related discrimination also affects the spread of the virus through its effect on public attitudes toward prevention and restriction, health service procurement, and in the establishment of health-related policies. It is important to first understand the relevant concepts and processes, and also to understand the underlying causes of discrimination in order to fight it. Social psychology offers multidimensional and comprehensive explanations of prejudice and discrimination. This review's primary aim was to examine the motivations behind COVID-19-related discrimination based on social psychological perspectives. In line with this aim, the review first defines discrimination in detail, plus the related concepts and main social psychological theories on prejudice and discrimination. Then, pandemic-related discrimination in light of past experiences is discussed and explanations put forward for the theoretical perspectives and inferences specific to COVID-19. Finally, recommendations are made in order to prevent and combat discrimination related to infectious diseases.Item İletişim Fakültesi'nde Yaratıcı Drama Eğitimi: Yaratıcı Dramanın Danışman-Öğrenci İlişkilerinin İyileştirilmesinde Araç Olarak Kullanılması(Dramada Arayışlar., 2005) Aygün Cengiz, SerpilItem İletişimin Özneleri(Başkent Üniversitesi Geliştirme Vakfı İktisadi İşletmesi, 2025-06) Erdem, Beste Nigar; Akcan, Burçe; Çağlıyan, Çağdaş Emrah; Akçay, Ebru; Temizer, Eylem; Canlı, Kübra; Ünal Çınar,Reyhan; Ay, Semra; Dikkol Akçay, Selver; Bal, Sevil; Kına, Sezer A.; Özcan, S. Türkiye'de İnternet., 2007) Aygün Cengiz, SerpilE-sağlık, yeni iletişim teknolojilerinin tüm işlevlerinin hizmete sunularak, hastaların tedavisinde, sağlık hizmetlerine çabuk ve kolay ulaşılmasında, sağlık sektöründe yer alan tüm paydaşlara nitelikli, verimli ve etkili hizmetlerin sunumunda kullanılması anlamına gelmektedir. E-health is the provision of healthcare supported by e-communication. According to Eysenbach, e-health ?is an emerging field in the intersection of medical informatics, public health and business, referring to health services and information delivered or enhanced through the Internet and related technologies? and the term also ?characterizes not only a technical development, but also a state-of-mind, a way of thinking, an attitude, and a commitment for networked, global thinking, to improve health care locally, regionally, and worldwide by using information and communication technology.? It has been observed that the efforts of transformation in health affairs in Turkey since 1923 concentrated on four basic issues ?organisational, privacy and security, practices, tecniques. Privacy and security are the most important issues which consist of audit logging, person authentication, system authentication, authorization, data integrity checking, error handling, secure transport and non-repudiation. However, when e-health and ethics are at issue, ethical codes for medical and health web sites are not determined and so there are almost no ethical codes which are adequately formalised in Turkey. Ethical code of conduct for medical and health web sites consist authoritative, complementarity, privacy, attribution, justifiability, transparency, financial disclosure and advertising policy. It is necessary to develop ethical codes for Turkish medical and health web sites which rapidly increase in Ýnternet. This study aims to show the importance of this problem and tries to make a critical survey of the web sites which provide etherapy in Turkish.Item Kdz. Mobbing as interpersonal violence has been newly defined and been taken to court although it has not been a new phenomenon. Mobbing is a persistent and systematic harassment which can be observed during communication situations. Mobbing can occur in different ways and it causes incalculable economic and psychological harm for both the targeted worker and the employer. People those who witness mobbing should ethically intervene and the employer should provide a safe, respectful work environment for all employees ana also mobbed people should get support from his/her relatives, employer, law people, other mobbed persons and mental health professionals who will help him/her to struggle with mobbing more powerfully.Item Kül Tegin ve Bilge Kağan Yazıtlarında Kadın Üzerine Bir İnceleme(,Kültür Dergisi ,103 ,58-61, 1994) Aygün, Serpil
