Item Being a Young Speaker of the Gagauz Language in Post-Soviet Context(2023) Inan, Kayhan; Kirmizi, Gulin DagdevirenThe concept of identity assumes great importance in the context of endangered languages. In this study, the identity perceptions of Gagauz adolescents were investigated using Bucholtz and Hall's (2005) sociocultural linguistic approach. To this end, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with three adolescent Gagauz speakers who had distinctive profiles in terms of Gagauz identity. Bucholtz and Hall's indexicality principle, specifically the use of WE- and THEY- references, was taken into consideration in the analysis of interviews held with young Gagauz speakers. In the semistructured interviews, the participants responded to specific questions that probed self-identification, the relationship between the Gagauz language and ethnicity, the future of Gagauz people and Gagauz language, and perceived linguistic (in)security when speaking Gagauz and Russian languages, as well as language choice at school. The findings show that the participants have different profiles and use various indexical references and linguistic strategies regarding group membership. The influence of Russia and the Russian language on Gagauz identity is salient in social life, bureaucracy, and politics. As a result, the strong identification with ethnic identity and perception of Gagauz identity does not help maintain the Gagauz language in Gagauzia.Item Validity and Reliability Study of the Unrealistic Family Expectations Scale in Turkish Culture(2023) Bali, Onur; Donmez, BurhanettinThe study aims to perform the validity and reliability analysis of Unrealistic Parental Expectations Scale in Turkish culture, developed by Imasa (2012). To do so, the scale was translated from English into Turkish language and validity and reliability analysis were conducted. Research data were collected from two different samples: the first sample consists of 229 and the second sample consists of 235 secondary school students. Validity of the scale was tested with exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and reliability was tested with Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient. The results of exploratory factor analysis indicated that while the original scale was consisting of 11 items in a single factor, the translated scale involved 10 items in a single factor explaining the 40% of variance of the structure. The confirmatory factor analysis data showed a good model-data fit of the scale's single factor structure. Concerning reliability, Cronbach's Alpha internal consistency coefficient was .83 for the first sample and .80 for the second sample. Therefore, the research findings show that the Turkish form of the Unrealistic Parental Expectations Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool for determining secondary school students' perceptions of their parents' unrealistic academic expectations.Item 'The Notion of Japan as an Example of Non-Western Modernization' in Mehmet Akif Ersoy through the Impact of Abdurresit Ibrahim(2022) Demir, AhmetIn Ottoman-Turkish society, the debates around the concepts of modernization and civilization have an important place in the thought of the 20th century. Within these discussions, it is noteworthy that Turkish national poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy presents Japan, which is an example of non-Western modernization, as an ideal model for Ottoman-Turkish modernization. Abdurresit Ibrahim (1857-1944), who was influential in Turkish and Islamic geography with his activist identity and thoughts in the 19th and 20th centuries, had a great share in Akif's adoption of Japanese modernization as an ideal example of non-Western modernization. Abdurresit Ibrahim is one of the important names that Turkish society raised as an intellectual, traveller, political leader and highbrow in the 19th and 20th centuries. Abdurresit Ibrahim, who is one of the Idil-Ural Turks and struggles for the independence and unity of the Russian Turks and the entire Islamic world, is known for his thoughts on Turkish and Islamic geography and his activities in Japan. It is also known as the name that introduced Islam to Japan. Abdurresit Ibrahim visited Japan in the first half of 1909 and wanted to establish close relations between Japanese and Asian Muslims. Abdurresit Ibrahim made a long journey starting in September 1908, covering Turkestan, Siberia, Mongolia, Manchuria, China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Hejaz and Syria, and ending in Istanbul in 1910. Abdurresit Ibrahim published this journey in two volumes in 1910-1913, under the name of Alem-i Islam ve Japonya'da Intisar-i Islamiyet. The work is mostly about Japan. Abdurresit Ibrahim idealizes the Japanese modernization in his work titled Alem-i Islam ve Japonya'da Intisar-i Islamiyet (1910-1913), and his thoughts influence some Ottoman-Turkish intellectuals, Mehmet Akif, in particular. Having arrived in the Ottoman capital in 1910, Ibrahim who was already a well-known Muslim traveller and activist, established close relations with Islamist intellectuals in Istanbul. The close relationship he built with Sirat-i Mustakim journal and its staff, especially with Mehmet Akif, is an important example of this. The journal, Sirat-i Mustakim, was one of the most important channels in which Abdurresit Ibrahim sent his articles containing his impressions and experiences during his long journey (1908-1910). We can say that both the writings in Sirat-i Mustakim and the Alem-i Islam ve Japonya'da Intisar-i Islamiyet had a profound effect on Turkish intellectuals regarding Japanese modernization. Abdurresit Ibrahim tried to explain his travel observations and thoughts on the Islamic world through sermons and conferences organized by Sirat-i Mustakim. Therefore, Abdurresit Ibrahim is an important person in terms of his place in the development of Turkish-Japanese relations. He has a great influence on the formation of sympathy for Japan among the Turkish/Muslim peoples. The friendship that Akif developed with Abdurresit Ibrahim brought along an intellectual influence as well. As a result of this influence, Akif presented the Japanese model as an example of non-Western modernity for Ottoman-Turkish modernization at a time (at the beginning of 20th century) when Ottoman-Turkish modernization, along with Westernization, occupied the agenda as an issue and was discussed. He noted that Japanese modernization was a good alternative that could be a source of inspiration within the framework of non-Western modernity. Akif's thoughts inspired by Abdurresit Ibrahim appear concretely in his poem named Suleymaniye Kursusunde (1912). While discussing the salvation remedies of the Islamic world in the poem, Japanese modernization was idealized as an example of non-Western modernization in relation to concepts such as civilization, Westernization, development and progress in the Ottoman-Turkish public opinion. It was stated that Turkish modernization can be realized by staying away from a completely imitative structure which is Western-centred, singular, and stuck in Western patterns and by preserving national identity and culture on the dynamics of Islamic civilization. In this regard, it was argued as a thesis that Japanese modernization can be taken as an example. Therefore, in discussions about Ottoman-Turkish modernization and civilization among Ottoman-Turkish intellectuals, and particularly in Mehmet Akif's world of thought, it is necessary to take into account that the Japanese modernization is debated as an important role model. In this study, Japanese modernization as an example of non-Western modernization and the impact of Abdurresit Ibrahim on Mehmet Akif are handled within the framework of Suleymaniye Kursusunde. The notion of 'Japanese modernization' in Akif is evaluated in relation to the concepts of 'multiple modernities' and 'non-Western modernization'. The reflections of the concept of 'multiple modernities' in Akif's world of thought are discussed and it is revealed that he presented Japanese modernization as an ideal example of 'non-Western modernization' for Ottoman-Turkish modernization.Item On Approximation of Helix by 3(rd), 5(th) and 7(th) Order Bezier Curves in E-3(2022) Kilicoglu, SeydaApproximation of helices has been studied by using in many ways. In this study, it has been examined how a circular helix can be written as Bezier curve and written the 3(th) degree, 5(th) degree, and the 7(th) degree Maclaurin series expansions of helices for the polynomial forms. Hence, they can be written cubic, 5(th) order, and 7(th) order Bezier curves, based on the control points with matrix form we have already given in E-3. Further we have given the control points of the Bezier curve based on the coefficients of the Maclaurin series expansion of the circular helix.Item On Approximation Sine Wave with the 5(Th) and 7(Th) Order Bezier Paths in Plane(2022) Kilicoglu, SeydaThere are many studies to approximate to sine curve or sine wave. In this study, it has been examined the way how the sine wave can be written as any order Bezier curve. First, it has been written the 5(th) and the 7(th) degree Maclaurin series expansion of the parametric form of sine curve. Also, they are 5(th) and the 7(th) order Bezier paths, based on the control points with matrix form in E-2. Hence it has been given the control points of the 5(th) and the 7(th) order Bezier curve based on the coefficients of the 5(th) and the 7(th) degree Maclaurin series expansion of the sine curves in three steps. Further it has been given the coefficients based on the control points of the 5(th) and the 7(th) order Bezier curve too.Item Navigating the Covid-19 Turbulence in Higher Education: Evidence from Turkish Faculty Members(2022) Orucu, Deniz; Kutlugun, H. ElifCovid 19 was the first pandemic of the modern era to strike with such virulence. We sought to understand this recent phenomenon and contribute to the empirical findings on the expectations from HEI leadership and management in Turkey. Drawing on the Turbulence Theory, we explored how the academic staff experienced the initial phase of the pandemic in Turkey and how they perceived the HE leaders' navigation of the crisis at the selected universities. Within qualitative phenomonology, data from semi-structured interviews with a convenient sample of 10 academic staff in five public and five private universities in Turkey, was analysed through content analysis. Findings highlighted the opportunities and challenges of the pandemic for the faculty at personal and organizational level in an intersectional pattern. Moreover, the ways HEI leaders navigated the crisis created binaries in the form of experience vs. inexperience and trust vs. distrust. The challenges derived from the rapid but ineffective decision-making processes and the heightened surveillance mechanisms over the academic staff; which in some cases resulted in lack of trust. Hence, the turbulence level was shaped by how the universities and their leaders addressed it. In such cases, practices of building trustworthy connections, more distributive forms of leadership and robust communication; which would help the leaders to navigate the turbulence at times of crises are significant. Further recommendations are provided for research, policy and practice.Item The Effects of Mental Games on Third Graders' Reading Comprehension Skills in Turkish Classes(2022) Erdem, Yasemin; Gok, Bilge; 0000-0002-1548-164X; 0000-0002-1492-8403With the study reported on here we set about to reveal the effects of mental games on third graders' reading comprehension skills in Turkish classes. The study group comprised 71 students, 35 of whom were included in the experimental group, and 36 in the control group. The experimental group played simple to difficult mental games selected by the researcher for 2 hours per week for 10 weeks. In the control group, the students continued with the traditional teaching process which excluded the playing of mental games until the end of the semester. Mental games like Whatzizz, detective, Q-bitz, Target 5, six, 3 stone, 9 stone, Skippity, Reversi, Kulami, that correspond to skills such as attention-concentration, reasoning, logical inference, and strategic thinking, were used. The study was conducted as a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design. The quantitative data were collected through the reading comprehension skill test. The pre-test data and the post-test-data collected through the test constituted the research data. The research data were analysed by using the 2-factor ANOVA test for mixed designs. The post-test scores of the students in the experimental group were higher than those of the students in the control group. The findings obtained from the quantitative analysis indicate that mental games had a positive effect on the Turkish reading comprehension of students in the experimental group as well as positive effects on students' skills such as strategic thinking, logical inference and reasoning.Item About Assessment of Carotid Artery Calcifications on Radiographs Response(2022) Cetin, Mehtap Bilgin; Sezgin, Yasemin; Yilmaz, Mediha Nur Nisanci; Secgin, Cansu Koseoglu; 35131087; AAC-5931-2020Item Distortion bound and growth theorems for a subclass of analytic functions defiined by $q$-derivative(2022) Altintas, Osman; Mustafa, NizamiIn this study, we introduce and examine a subclasses of analytic and univalent functions defined by q -derivative. The aim of this study is to adapt the Learning Motivation in Computer Programming Courses Scale developed by Law, Lee ve Yu 2010 to Turkish. In order to determine its validity and reliability, the scale consisting of 19 six-point Likert-type items within six factors individual attitude and expectation, challenging goals, clear direction, reward and recognition, punishment and social pressure and competition was applied to 312 engineering faculty students at a private university. When the results of the confirmatory factor analysis were examined, it was confirmed that the scale had six factors, and the goodness of fit indices are at an acceptable degree. The reliability of the scale was assessed by the Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficiencies were found to be 0.90 for the whole scale and between 0.71 and 0.83 for the factors. These results show that scale is a valid and reliable measuring tool for learning motivation in computer programming courses
