Being a Young Speaker of the Gagauz Language in Post-Soviet Context
(2023) Inan, Kayhan; Kirmizi, Gulin Dagdeviren
The concept of identity assumes great importance in the context of endangered languages. In this study, the identity perceptions of Gagauz adolescents were investigated using Bucholtz and Hall's (2005) sociocultural linguistic approach. To this end, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with three adolescent Gagauz speakers who had distinctive profiles in terms of Gagauz identity. Bucholtz and Hall's indexicality principle, specifically the use of WE- and THEY- references, was taken into consideration in the analysis of interviews held with young Gagauz speakers. In the semistructured interviews, the participants responded to specific questions that probed self-identification, the relationship between the Gagauz language and ethnicity, the future of Gagauz people and Gagauz language, and perceived linguistic (in)security when speaking Gagauz and Russian languages, as well as language choice at school. The findings show that the participants have different profiles and use various indexical references and linguistic strategies regarding group membership. The influence of Russia and the Russian language on Gagauz identity is salient in social life, bureaucracy, and politics. As a result, the strong identification with ethnic identity and perception of Gagauz identity does not help maintain the Gagauz language in Gagauzia.

On Approximation of Helix by 3(rd), 5(th) and 7(th) Order Bezier Curves in E-3
    (2022) Kilicoglu, Seyda
Approximation of helices has been studied by using in many ways. In this study, it has been examined how a circular helix can be written as Bezier curve and written the 3(th) degree, 5(th) degree, and the 7(th) degree Maclaurin series expansions of helices for the polynomial forms. Hence, they can be written cubic, 5(th) order, and 7(th) order Bezier curves, based on the control points with matrix form we have already given in E-3. Further we have given the control points of the Bezier curve based on the coefficients of the Maclaurin series expansion of the circular helix.

On Approximation Sine Wave with the 5(Th) and 7(Th) Order Bezier Paths in Plane
    (2022) Kilicoglu, Seyda
There are many studies to approximate to sine curve or sine wave. In this study, it has been examined the way how the sine wave can be written as any order Bezier curve. First, it has been written the 5(th) and the 7(th) degree Maclaurin series expansion of the parametric form of sine curve. Also, they are 5(th) and the 7(th) order Bezier paths, based on the control points with matrix form in E-2. Hence it has been given the control points of the 5(th) and the 7(th) order Bezier curve based on the coefficients of the 5(th) and the 7(th) degree Maclaurin series expansion of the sine curves in three steps. Further it has been given the coefficients based on the control points of the 5(th) and the 7(th) order Bezier curve too.

Navigating the Covid-19 Turbulence in Higher Education: Evidence from Turkish Faculty Members
(2022) Orucu, Deniz; Kutlugun, H. Elif
Covid 19 was the first pandemic of the modern era to strike with such virulence. We sought to understand this recent phenomenon and contribute to the empirical findings on the expectations from HEI leadership and management in Turkey. Drawing on the Turbulence Theory, we explored how the academic staff experienced the initial phase of the pandemic in Turkey and how they perceived the HE leaders' navigation of the crisis at the selected universities. Within qualitative phenomonology, data from semi-structured interviews with a convenient sample of 10 academic staff in five public and five private universities in Turkey, was analysed through content analysis. Findings highlighted the opportunities and challenges of the pandemic for the faculty at personal and organizational level in an intersectional pattern. Moreover, the ways HEI leaders navigated the crisis created binaries in the form of experience vs. inexperience and trust vs. distrust. The challenges derived from the rapid but ineffective decision-making processes and the heightened surveillance mechanisms over the academic staff; which in some cases resulted in lack of trust. Hence, the turbulence level was shaped by how the universities and their leaders addressed it. In such cases, practices of building trustworthy connections, more distributive forms of leadership and robust communication; which would help the leaders to navigate the turbulence at times of crises are significant. Further recommendations are provided for research, policy and practice.

The Effects of Mental Games on Third Graders' Reading Comprehension Skills in Turkish Classes
    (2022) Erdem, Yasemin; Gok, Bilge; 0000-0002-1548-164X; 0000-0002-1492-8403
With the study reported on here we set about to reveal the effects of mental games on third graders' reading comprehension skills in Turkish classes. The study group comprised 71 students, 35 of whom were included in the experimental group, and 36 in the control group. The experimental group played simple to difficult mental games selected by the researcher for 2 hours per week for 10 weeks. In the control group, the students continued with the traditional teaching process which excluded the playing of mental games until the end of the semester. Mental games like Whatzizz, detective, Q-bitz, Target 5, six, 3 stone, 9 stone, Skippity, Reversi, Kulami, that correspond to skills such as attention-concentration, reasoning, logical inference, and strategic thinking, were used. The study was conducted as a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design. The quantitative data were collected through the reading comprehension skill test. The pre-test data and the post-test-data collected through the test constituted the research data. The research data were analysed by using the 2-factor ANOVA test for mixed designs. The post-test scores of the students in the experimental group were higher than those of the students in the control group. The findings obtained from the quantitative analysis indicate that mental games had a positive effect on the Turkish reading comprehension of students in the experimental group as well as positive effects on students' skills such as strategic thinking, logical inference and reasoning.

Tracing students' mathematics learning loss during school closures in teachers' self-reported practices
(2022) Haser, Cigdem; Dogan, Oguzhan; Erhan, Gonul Kurt
The study explored how mathematics learning loss took place among Turkish middle school students during the COVID-19 school closures through mathematics teachers' self-reported practices, challenges, and efforts while they were trying to support their students' learning. Interviews with 19 public and 9 private middle school mathematics teachers indicated that there were certain differences in teachers' practices and revealed the existing inequalities among the schools, classrooms, and students. Students' lack of participation, teachers' limited use of methods to teach mathematics, the socio-economic status of families and their lack of collaboration with teachers were among the reasons for mathematics learning loss.

On The Matrix Representation Of 5th Order Bezier Curve And Its Derivatives In E-3
    (2022) Kilicoglu, Seyda; Senyurt, Suleyman
Using the matrix representation form, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth derivatives of 5th order Bezier curves are examined based on the control points in E-3. In addition to this, each derivative of 5th order Bezier curves is given by their control points. Further, a simple way has been given to find the control points of a Bezier curves and its derivatives by using matrix notations. An example has also been provided and the corresponding figures which are drawn by Geogebra v5 have been presented in the end.

Emerging Adults' Perceived Life Skills, Self - Regulation, Emotional Regulation, Helicopter Parenting and Autonomy Supportive Behaviours
(2022) Guclu, Cansu Hazal; Ozdogan, H. Kubra; Cok, Figen
Life skills have an inclusive effect on various emotional and social aspects of emerging adults' development. Helicopter parenting is quite common among today's parents towards their children at various ages including emerging adult children. The relationship between life skills and psychological variables such as emotional regulation, helicopter parenting and autonomy supportive behaviours is important for emerging adults. The aim of this study is to examine the role of self-regulation, emotional regulation, autonomy supportive behaviours and helicopter parenting on emerging adults' perceived level of life skills. For this purpose, 451 emerging adults (21.7 % male and 78.3 % female) between the ages of 18 and 27 (M = 21.3, SD = 1.92) participated in this study from a comprehensive university from central Turkey. Students' Perception for Life Skills Questionnaire, Helicopter Parenting and Autonomy Supportive Behaviours Scale, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and Self-Regulation Questionnaire were administered to volunteer participants. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that perceived life skills predicted by self-regulation (beta = .45, t = 10.872, p = .000) and autonomy supportive behaviours (beta = .14, t = 3.43, p = .001). Results are presented and discussed under the light of life skills and related variables.

Nominal Stance in Cross-Disciplinary Academic Writing of Ll and L2 Speakers in Noun
(2022) Kirmizi, Ozkan; Kirmizi, Gulin Dagdeviren
Background. Literature indicates that in academic writing, authors are expected to demonstrate a noticeable stance so that they can make their meaning clear. Therefore, differences between native and non-native writers along with cross-disciplinary academic writing assume great significance.Purpose. The interactional, dialogic, and reflective nature of academic writing requires writers to utilize stance-establishing tools in their writing, the most prominent ones being stance nouns. In addition, the that-clause construction plays a vital role in conveying the author's stance. Studies that compare L1 Turkish writers of English and L1 English writers regarding academic writing are rather scarce. As such, the present paper aims to analyze L1 Turkish writers of English and L1 English writers in eight disciplines from natural and social sciences in terms of the use of stance nouns in that-clause constructions.Methods. The study employs Jiang and Hyland's (2016) functional classification model in exploring the nominal stance in cross-disciplinary writing of L1 Turkish writers of English and L1 English writers. To this end, journals with high impact in eight disciplines from social and natural sciences were scanned and a total of 320 articles were included in the corpus. The social sciences included in the present study cover applied linguistics, history, psychology, and sociology while the natural sciences cover medicine, engineering, astronomy, and biology. In total, a corpus of 2.232.164 words was formed. Results and Implications. The study found significant differences not only in terms of natural and social sciences but also in terms of L1/L2 distinction. In addition, a secondary purpose of the study was to see whether writers in social and natural sciences differed in terms of empiricist and interpretive rationality. The results indicated that writers in social sciences tended to use more status and cognition nouns, indicating that they tend to be more interpretive. With significant differences between Turkish and English writers from a cross-disciplinary perspective, the present study offers important insights into how writers weave their stance in academic writing. Moreover, the present study also confirmed that writers in social sciences, whether L1 or L2, tend to use more stance nouns compared with writers in natural sciences.
