    Gender Differences in the Relation of Personality Traits and Self-Presentation with Physical Activity

    Objectives. - The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of physical activity with personality traits and self-presentation and gender differences in this relation. Methods. - Two hundred thirteen female (M-age = 21.73 +/- 1.63), 247 male (M-age = 22.37 +/- 2.19) exercisers voluntarily participated in this study. The Five Factor Personality Inventory (short version), Self Presentation in Exercise Questionnaire and The short version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire was administered to participants. Results. - Regression analysis indicated that openness to experience was a significant predictor of moderate physical activity in females. On the other hand, agreeableness, emotional stability and conscientiousness were related to vigorous physical activity in males. Analysis also revealed significant relationship between vigorous physical activity and impression motivation in both males and females. Furthermore, impression construction was also associated with vigorous physical activity in females. Conclusion. - This study extended the previous studies on Western culture to non-western culture of Turkey and also provided some explanation for inconclusive results about the gender differences in the relationship of personality and physical activity. The study also examined the relationship between self-presentation and physical activity in terms of gender, which is less frequently studied. The findings of this study indicated that the pattern of relation of physical activity with personality traits differed with regard to gender. For males, personality characteristic were related with vigorous physical activity but for females personality is predictor of moderate physical activity. The patterns of relation of physical activity with self-presentation are similar for males and females and self-presentation is related with the vigorous physical activity for both gender.     Are Turkish Elite Sailors Competing in Laser and 470 Classes Ready for The Olympics?

    BACKGROUND: Aerobic and anaerobic capacity, muscle strength and balance skills are important parameters in sailors. We aimed to investigate the aerobic and anaerobic capacity, knee muscle strength, hand grip strength and balance of elite Turkish sailors competing in 470 and Laser classes selected for the Olympic team and to establish the differences in physical fitness status between sailors competing in 470 and Laser classes. METHODS: Nine Laser and ten 470 sailors were evaluated. A treadmill VO2max test for aerobic capacity, a Wingate cycle ergometer test for anaerobic power and capacity, an isokinetic knee muscle strength assessment at 60 degrees/s and 120 degrees/s angular velocities (output data were flexor peak torque, extensor peak torque and H/Q strength ratio), an isometric hand grip strength assessment and a star excursion balance test (SEBT) were performed. RESULTS: Laser and 470 sailors showed similar physical fitness values and no difference was found between sailing classes (P>0.05) for all test results. Most of the sailors' H/Q strength ratios were lower than normal values. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the physical requirements of Laser and 470 sailors are similar; however, they are both at risk of knee injury because of low H/Q strength ratios. Athletic trainers and physiotherapists working with sailors should also consider the H/Q strength ratio because low values of H/Q strength ratio are seen in this population. The results of this study may constitute a basis for further studies because we have reported the results of several physical fitness tests together and in a detailed manner.

    Acute effect of scapular proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques and classic exercises in adhesive capsulitis: a randomized controlled trial

    [Purpose] The aim of our study was to compare the initial effects of scapular proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques and classic exercise interventions with physiotherapy modalities on pain, scapular dyskinesis, range of motion, and function in adhesive capsulitis. [Subjects and Methods] Fifty-three subjects were allocated to 3 groups: scapular proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation exercies and physiotherapy modalities, classic exercise and physiotherapy modalities, and only physiotherapy modalities. The intervention was applied in a single session. The Visual Analog Scale, Lateral Scapular Slide Test, range of motion and Simple Shoulder Test were evaluated before and just after the one-hour intervention in the same session (all in one session). [Results] All of the groups showed significant differences in shoulder flexion and abduction range of motion and Simple Shoulder Test scores. There were statistically significant differences in Visual Analog Scale scores in the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and control groups, and no treatment method had significant effect on the Lateral Scapular Slide Test results. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups before and after the intervention. [Conclusion] Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, classic exercise, and physiotherapy modalities had immediate effects on adhesive capsulitis in our study. However, there was no additional benefit of exercises in one session over physiotherapy modalities. Also, an effective treatment regimen for shoulder rehabilitation of adhesive capsulitis patients should include scapular exercises.

    The comparison of physical activity, disability, and quality of life of pregnant women in different trimesters

    Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the physical activity, disability, and quality of life in pregnant women in different trimesters. Material and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study and a total of 91 pregnant women (first trimester n=20, second trimester n= 34, third trimester n=37) were enrolled. The physical activity levels were evaluated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire; the disability was evaluated with the Oswestry Low Back Pain Questionnaire, and the quality of life levels was determined with the Short Form-36 questionnaire. Results: The demographic features of the pregnant women were similar in different trimesters (p>.05). The comparison of their physical activity levels in terms of trimesters, the level of moderate and vigorous physical activities, and the activity level of walking showed no difference (p>.05). The total physical activity level in the second trimester was higher than in the first trimester (p=.048); the level of disability due to low back pain was significantly higher in the third trimester than other trimesters (p=.003); and the physical function parameter of the quality of life scale was significantly lower in the third trimester compared to the first and the second ones (p=.001). However, there were no significant differences in the other parameters of the quality of life (p>.05). Conclusion: The levels of physical activity, physical functioning and disability varied in different trimesters. It can be stated that the progress of the pregnancy decreases physical function and triggers disability due to low back pain; however, the change in the level of physical activity is related to the adaptation to pregnancy and not to gestational age.     Comparison of virtual reality exergaming and home exercise programs in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome and scapular dyskinesis: Short term effect

    Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the short term effects of home exercise program and virtual reality exergaming in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS). Methods: A total of 30 patients with SAIS were randomized into two groups which are Home Exercise Program (EX Group) (mean age: 40.6 +/- 11.7 years) and Virtual Reality Exergaming Program (WII Group) (mean age: 40.33 +/- 13.2 years). Subjects were assessed at the first session, at the end of the treatment (6 weeks) and at 1 month follow-up. The groups were assessed and compared with Visual Analogue Scale (based on rest, activity and night pain), Neer and Hawkins Tests, Scapular Retraction Test (SRT), Scapular Assistance Test (SAT), Lateral Scapular Slide Test (LSST) and shoulder disability (Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI)). Results: Intensity of pain was significantly decreased in both groups with the treatment (p < 0.05). The WII Group had significantly better results for all Neer test, SRT and SAT than the EX Group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Virtual reality exergaming programs with these programs were found more effective than home exercise programs at short term in subjects with SAIS .
