Abstract
Introduction: Repetitive head flexion is one of the most important risk factors causing neck pain associated to mobile phone use. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise and lifestyle modifications on pain and neck function in mobile phone users with neck pain.
Materials and methods: Eighty-five sedentary participants using smartphones for more than 5 hours daily were included in the study. The participants were divided into three groups: exercise (EG n=29), exercise+lifestyle modification (EGL n=28), and control group (CG n=28). The EG received a home exercise treatment program for 4 weeks. The EGL received lifestyle modification suggestions added to the home exercise program. The CG did not receive any treatments. Pain intensity was evaluated during rest and activity with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and neck function was assessed with the Neck Disability Index at the beginning and at the end of the intervention. Results: There were significant improvements in the EG and EGL for all parameters (p<0.05). However, no significant changes were present in the CG (p>0.05). Post-hoc analysis highlighted a significant difference only in VAS during activity between groups (p<0.05). The lifestyle modification had no added benefit over exercise (p>0.05). Conclusion: Exercise has positive effects on pain and neck function and should be recommended for individuals who frequently use mobile devices.
