Item Plantar Fascia Coronal Length: A New Parameter for Plantar Fascia Assessment(2015) Sari, Ahmet Sinan; Demircay, Emre; Cakmak, Gokhan; Sahin, M. Sukru; Tuncay, I. Cengiz; Altun, Suleyman; 0000-0003-1274-4288; 0000-0001-7677-8423; 25488598; AAL-2368-2021; AAJ-9972-2021The effects of gender and various anthropometric variables were previously reported as significant predictors of plantar fascia thickness. Although a strong correlation between either the body weight or body mass index (BMI) and plantar fascia thickness were not demonstrated, a moderate relation was stated. We retrospectively investigated the role of gender, height, weight, and body mass index on plantar fascia thickness at the calcaneal origin (PFCO) and 1 cm distal from the calcaneal origin (PF1cm) and the coronal length of the plantar fascia at the calcaneal origin (CLPF) in healthy subjects. The PFCO, PF1cm, and CLPF were retrospectively measured from magnetic resonance images of 100 healthy subjects. The gender, height, weight, and body mass index of the participants were also noted. Gender was a predictive factor for the length of the CLPF. The subjects with a BMI >25 kg/m(2) had a significantly greater PFCO, PF1cm, and CLPF. Height was mildly and BMI and weight were moderately related to the PFCO. However the CLPF showed a better correlation with height, BMI, and weight than that of plantar fascia thickness. CLPF better reflected the role of weight, BMI, and height than its thickness. It is a new parameter that could be valuable in the evaluation of plantar fascia disorders. Materials and Methods: We prospectively investigated 2566 patients at a tertiary referral hospital. Nutritional status was screened using NRS 2002, and the length of the stay (LOS) was the main outcome measure. Hospital stays >10 days were accepted as prolonged LOS. NRS scores >= 3 were accepted as indicating risk for malnutrition. Statistical analyses were performed to determine the independent risk factors for malnutrition risk and prolonged LOS. Results: The mean age of patients was 56.6 +/- 16.9 years. According to the NRS 2002, 964 patients (37.6%) were without risk, 1320 (51.4%) warranted surveillance and 282 (11%) were at high risk for malnutrition. Malnutrition rate was the highest in the intensive care unit (22.01%). Prolonged LOS was seen in 24.4% of patients. Intensive care unit stay [odds ratio (OR): 0.585; confidence interval (CI): 1.45-2.22; p<0.001] and an NRS score >= 3 (OR: 0.88; CI: 1.87-3.13; p<0.001) were independent risk factors for prolonged LOS. Conclusion: Improving healthcare outcomes while avoiding preventable healthcare costs is an important goal of healthcare provision in developing countries. NRS 2002 was predictive of LOS, and thus, of patient prognosis. Further community-based studies are warranted to assess the impact of NRS 2002 on reducing healthcare costs.Item Is obesity a problem that threatens oral health in adults?(2021) Yilmaz, Busra; Somay, Efsun; 0000-0003-0633-5648Purpose: Obesity is one of the increasingly negative factors affecting oral and dental health directly or indirectly in many developed and developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between obesity and dental problems in adults and to investigate the effect of obesity on oral and dental health. Materials and Methods: 200 patients over the age of 18 who applied with various dental complaints were examined clinically and radiologically. They were classified as 50 healthy females, 50 healthy males, 50 obese females, and 50 obese males according to the body mass index determined by the World Health Organization (healthy individual < 30.0 kg / m(2) and 30.0 kg / m(2) <= obesity individual). Sociodemographic characteristics, dental health status, and data of all patients were examined. Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between obesity and the number of tooth loss, the number of dental caries, educational status, and the frequency of applying to the dentist. Periodontitis was detected at a higher rate in the obesity group (58 %) compared to the control group, but the relationship between obesity and periodontal status was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Dental problems such as tooth loss, the number of dental caries, and periodontitis were higher in the obesity group, and this result showed that obesity threatens oral and dental health. To prevent these problems, there is a need for preventive strategies and increasing awareness of oral and dental health in obese patients.Item Effects of reproductive and sociodemographic factors on obesity in Turkish women: a pilot study(2019) Bayram, Sinem; Koseler, Esra; Kiziltan, Gul; Ok, Mebtap Akcil; Yesil, Esen; Kose, Beril; Ozdemir, Merve; Muftuoglu, Selen; Saka, Mendane; Aksoydan, Emine; Tayfur, Muhittin; Turker, Perim Fatma; Ercan, Aydan; 0000-0003-1569-7747; 0000-0002-4254-3711; AAF-4491-2021; AAG-6763-2020Background and aim: Obesity has become a global epidemic. The current research aimed to determine sociodemographic and reproductive predictors of obesity among Turkish women. Materials and methods: Eligible subjects (n:833) were 40-64 years-old women living in Turkey. A questionnaire consisted of questions about sociodemographic and reproductive factors and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were applied to participants by face to face interviews. Multivariate logistic regression examined the risk of being obese with a range of sociodemographic and reproductive factors. All analyses were performed with SPSS software (version 17.0; SPSS, Chicago, Ill., USA). Results: The mean BMI of women aged 51-64 years was 30.59 +/- 6.35 kg/m(2). After adjustments for all other variables, increased obesity risk remained significant in women who had two children, housewifes, minimum active ones, ex smokers and had less than high school education. For multiple regression analysis sociodemographic factors from the bivariate analyses were entered, controlling for menarch age, menopausal age, hormone RT, parity, number of stillbirth, abortion. There was significant association between family income, occupation, education and BMI. Conclusion. In summary these findings showed comparable patterns of association of sociodemographic and reproductive factors with obesity in Turkey. Specific healthy lifestyle counseling is important for decreasing obesity in childbearing age women.
