Promoting Development Through A Geographic Information System-Based Lodging Property Query System (LPQS) for Antalya, Turkey
(2016) Sumer, Selay Ilgaz; Sumer, Emre; Atasever, Hilal; AGA-5711-2022
Information technology currently plays an important role in many industries and has enabled the development of different sectors and economies. Geographic information system (GIS) is an information technology that triggers improvements in many countries, and this paper presents a method of using GIS in the retrieval of lodging properties. A Lodging Property Query System (LPQS) is a novel system proposed for use by travel agencies to perform spatial queries. The proposed system was tested on a sample dataset that contains lodging properties selected from five different regions located along the shoreline of Antalya, Turkey. The data layers were prepared with the MapInfo software package, and the spatial queries and graphical user interface were developed with the MapXtreme software development kit. This study aims to contribute to the development of the travel agencies by offering useful information that fits customer expectations and needs by means of spatial context.

    Counterfeit Supply Chains
(2015) Eser, Zeliha; Kurtulmusoglu, Bahar; Bicaksiz, Adnan; Sumer, Selay Ilgaz
This paper studies supply chains of counterfeits in Turkey based on insider information from actors in such chains as well as from knowledgeable witnesses. The study depends on semi-structured interviews with actors in or witnesses to such chains. Findings suggest that (i) various forms of counterfeit supply chains exist, (ii) profit margins of counterfeiters seem to be higher than legitimate businesses, (iii) counterfeiters are discouraged if they experience actual or threatened litigation, (iv) law enforcement places higher priority on fighting counterfeits that threaten public health and safety, and (v) counterfeits appear to drive down the prices of legitimate products. Overall, poor action by legitimate businesses against counterfeiters, weak institutional efforts on the part of law enforcement and low consumer awareness appear to foster counterfeit supply chains, or at least contribute to their persistence. A Novel Computer Vision-Based Advertisement System for Individual Marketing
(2018) Sumer, Ernie; Sumer, Selay Ilgaz; Ogul, Hasan
To improve the performance of marketing efforts, marketers seek new ways of attracting customers. Individual marketing is an efficient way of communicating with individuals. Meeting the individual customers' expectations and needs is becoming increasingly important in modern marketing activities. Marketers have started to concentrate on specific customers' demands. The paradigm shift from the masses to individuals has required changes to firms' marketing strategies. In this paper, a new system called the Personalized Smart Billboard System (PSBS) is introduced, which personalizes promotional messages by developing customer profiles using customers' accessories and some of their facial features. Once any of these clues are detected, related advertisements are shown to the customers. The system was tested with various portrait photos with different visual appearances and promising results were obtained. We anticipate that this system will present a helpful means of establishing more effective communication between businesses and their customers.
