Item A Local Search Heuristic with Self-tuning Parameter for Permutation Flow-Shop Scheduling Problem(2009) Dengiz, Berna; Alabas-Uslu, Cigdem; Sabuncuoglu, IhsanIn this paper, a new local search metaheuristic is proposed for the permutation flow-shop scheduling problem. In general, metaheuristics are widely used to solve this problem due to its NP-completeness. Although these heuristics are quite effective to solve the problem, they suffer from the need to optimize parameters. The proposed heuristic, named STLS, has a single self-tuning parameter which is calculated and updated dynamically based on both the response surface information of the problem field and the performance measure of the method throughout the search process. Especially, application simplicity of the algorithm is attractive for the users. Results of the experimental study show that STLS generates high quality solutions and outperforms the basic tabu search, simulated annealing, and record-to-record travel algorithms which are well-known local search based metaheuristics. The aim of this study is to adapt the Learning Motivation in Computer Programming Courses Scale developed by Law, Lee ve Yu 2010 to Turkish. In order to determine its validity and reliability, the scale consisting of 19 six-point Likert-type items within six factors individual attitude and expectation, challenging goals, clear direction, reward and recognition, punishment and social pressure and competition was applied to 312 engineering faculty students at a private university. When the results of the confirmatory factor analysis were examined, it was confirmed that the scale had six factors, and the goodness of fit indices are at an acceptable degree. The reliability of the scale was assessed by the Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficiencies were found to be 0.90 for the whole scale and between 0.71 and 0.83 for the factors. These results show that scale is a valid and reliable measuring tool for learning motivation in computer programming coursesItem Yükseköğretimde Uzaktan Eğitim Uygulamalarının İncelenmesi: Türkiye Örneği(Başkent Üniversitesi Eğitim Bilimleri Fakültesi, 2017) Cabi, Emine; Ersoy, Halil; 0000-0002-7488-0309; 0000-0003-1598-7656Bu çalışma 2010 yılından 2016 yılına kadar, Türkiye yükseköğretiminde uzaktan eğitim çalışmalarının sayısal veriler ışığında incelenmesini amaçlamaktadır. 2010 ile 2016 yılları arasındaki yükseköğretimdeki öğrenci sayıları, uzaktan eğitim veren ön lisans, lisans ve yüksek lisans programlarına yerleşen öğrenci sayıları ve mevcut program sayılarının dağılımları incelenmiştir. This study aims to investigate distance education implementations in higher education of Turkey from 2010 to 2016 by numeric data. For this purpose, the numbers and distribution of students at vocational schools, undergraduate and graduate level programs being executed totally in distance education method were analyzed. While it was possible to reach to the numbers of distant students at vocational schools and undergraduate levels between 2010 and 2015, only 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 years’ data were been able to obtained at graduate level. Moreover, the change in the numbers of distant students by years was investigated. Hence it is a case study, it portrays the existing situation longitudinally. In this context, it is believed that the study will contribute to the actions targeting to open new distance education programsItem Broadly effective metabolic and immune recovery with C5 inhibition in CHAPLE disease(2021) Ozen, Ahmet; Kasap, Nurhan; Vujkovic-Cvijin, Ivan; Apps, Richard; Cheung, Foo; Karakoc-Aydiner, Elif; Akkelle, Bilge; Sari, Sinan; Tutar, Engin; Uygun, Dilara Kocacik; Islek, Ali; Akgun, Gamze; Selcuk, Merve; Sezer, Oya Balci; Ozcay, Figen; Zhang, Yu; Kutluk, Gunsel; Topal, Erdem; Sayar, Ersin; Celikel, Cigdem; Houwen, Roderick H.J.; Bingol, Aysen; Ogulur, Ismail; Eltan, Sevgi Bilgic; Snow, Andrew L.; Lake, Camille; Fantoni, Giovanna; Alba, Camille; Sellers, Brian; Chauvin, Samuel D.; Dalgard, Clifton L.; Harari, Olivier; Ni, Yan G.; Wang, Ming-Dauh; Devalaraja-Narashimha, Kishor; Subramanian, Poorani; Ergelen, Rabia; Artan, Reha; Guner, Sukru Nail; Dalgic, Buket; Tsang, John; Belkaid, Yasmine; Ertem, Deniz; Baris, Safa; Lenardo, Michael J.; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8402-8208; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5214-516X; 33398182; AAI-9346-2021; ABG-5684-2020CHAPLE disease is a lethal syndrome caused by genetic loss of the complement regulatory protein CD55. Lenardo, Ozen and their colleagues report that blockade of C5 complement activation in a small cohort of pediatric patients with CHAPLE disease reduced gastrointestinal pathology and restored their immunity and growth. Complement hyperactivation, angiopathic thrombosis and protein-losing enteropathy (CHAPLE disease) is a lethal disease caused by genetic loss of the complement regulatory protein CD55, leading to overactivation of complement and innate immunity together with immunodeficiency due to immunoglobulin wasting in the intestine. We report in vivo human data accumulated using the complement C5 inhibitor eculizumab for the medical treatment of patients with CHAPLE disease. We observed cessation of gastrointestinal pathology together with restoration of normal immunity and metabolism. We found that patients rapidly renormalized immunoglobulin concentrations and other serum proteins as revealed by aptamer profiling, re-established a healthy gut microbiome, discontinued immunoglobulin replacement and other treatments and exhibited catch-up growth. Thus, we show that blockade of C5 by eculizumab effectively re-establishes regulation of the innate immune complement system to substantially reduce the pathophysiological manifestations of CD55 deficiency in humans.Item A Comparison between Mygind and Kaiteki positions in administration of drops to the olfactory cleft(2021) Milk, Dafna G.; Khong, Grace C.; Cam, Osman H.; Alfaro-Iraheta, Fernando; Tierney, Claire; Kassem, Firas; Leong, Samuel C.; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2785-4474; 33326692Objectives Topical nasal steroids are a common treatment intervention for olfactory dysfunction. Penetration of topic treatment to the olfactory cleft (OC), such as nasal drops, is greatly dependent on the position of the head when the treatment is administered. We aimed to examine the penetrance of nasal drops to the OC in two different head positions: the Mygind (lying head back) position and the Kaiteki position. Design and Setting The specimens were firstly positioned in Mygind, and thereafter in Kaiteki positions. Nasal drops mixed with blue food dye were administered into the nostrils in each of the head position. Endoscopic videos were recorded, and two blinded observers scored the extent of olfactory cleft penetration (OCP) using a 4-point scale (0 = none, 3 = heavy). Participants Twelve fresh-frozen cadaver specimens. Main outcome measures Penetration of the dye into the OC. Results The mean score of nasal drops penetrance to the OC in the Mygind position was 1.34 (standard deviation, SD = 0.92), as compared to 1.76 (SD = 0.65) in the Kaiteki position. The difference in the OCP score between the two groups was not statistically significant (P > .05). Conclusion Both Mygind and Kaiteki head positions are reasonable options for patients considering topical nasal drops for olfaction impairment. The preference of one position over the other should be determined by patient's preference and comfort.Item Efficacy of beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors to treat extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales bacteremia secondary to urinary tract infection in kidney transplant recipients (INCREMENT-SOT Project)(2021) Hamiyet Demirkaya, Melike; 33222379Background Whether active therapy with beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors (BLBLI) is as affective as carbapenems for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) bloodstream infection (BSI) secondary to urinary tract infection (UTI) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) remains unclear. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 306 KTR admitted to 30 centers from January 2014 to October 2016. Therapeutic failure (lack of cure or clinical improvement and/or death from any cause) at days 7 and 30 from ESBL-E BSI onset was the primary and secondary study outcomes, respectively. Results Therapeutic failure at days 7 and 30 occurred in 8.2% (25/306) and 13.4% (41/306) of patients. Hospital-acquired BSI (adjusted OR [aOR]: 4.10; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.50-11.20) and Pitt score (aOR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.21-1.77) were independently associated with therapeutic failure at day 7. Age-adjusted Charlson Index (aOR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.05-1.48), Pitt score (aOR: 1.72; 95% CI: 1.35-2.17), and lymphocyte count <= 500 cells/mu L at presentation (aOR: 3.16; 95% CI: 1.42-7.06) predicted therapeutic failure at day 30. Carbapenem monotherapy (68.6%, primarily meropenem) was the most frequent active therapy, followed by BLBLI monotherapy (10.8%, mostly piperacillin-tazobactam). Propensity score (PS)-adjusted models revealed no significant impact of the choice of active therapy (carbapenem-containing vs any other regimen, BLBLI- vs carbapenem-based monotherapy) within the first 72 hours on any of the study outcomes. Conclusions Our data suggest that active therapy based on BLBLI may be as effective as carbapenem-containing regimens for ESBL-E BSI secondary to UTI in the specific population of KTR. Potential residual confounding and unpowered sample size cannot be excluded (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02852902).Item Hyponatremia in Acute Bronchiolitis(2021) Gultekingil, Ayse; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7955-5735; 33409953; AAR-9945-2020Item MoS2 Thin Films Grown by Sulfurization of DC Sputtered Mo Thin Films on Si/SiO2 and C-Plane Sapphire Substrates(2021) Akcay, N.; Tivanov, M.; Ozcelik, S.; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3948-5629; ABB-7017-2020Here we report the growth of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films with different thicknesses on silicon dioxide/silicon (SiO2/Si) and c-plane sapphire substrates by sulfurization of direct current (DC) sputtered Mo precursor films in a chemical vapor deposition furnace with sulfur powder at 900 degrees C. The structural, morphological, optical, and electrical properties of the films on different substrates were investigated through a series of characterization in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the grown films on sapphire substrates had better crystallization and a well-stacked layered structure than the films on SiO2/Si substrates. The frequency difference between the characteristic modes E-2g(1) and A(1g) of hexagonal phase MoS2 was determined as similar to 26 cm(-1) which is consistent with the typical value of bulk MoS2. Energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectra exhibited that the films were near-stoichiometric. A small shift towards the lower binding energies in the Mo 3d(5/2) peak positions was observed due to the valency of Mo below +4 depending on the compositional ratios of the films in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that the films had smooth surfaces and a well-packed crystal structure. However, when the thickness of the films deposited on sapphire substrates increased, the strain between the sapphire substrate and MoS2 film caused the formation of the micro-domes in the film. In addition, the films exhibited high absorption and reflection properties in the near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) regions in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. Therefore, it is considered that the films can be used for photodetector applications in these regions and infrared shielding coating applications.Item All the Dark Triad and some of the Big Five traits are visible in the face(2021) Alper, Sinan; Bayrak, Fatih; Yilmaz, Onurcan; 0000-0001-6350-6234Some of the recent studies suggested that people can make accurate inferences about the level of the Big Five and the Dark Triad personality traits in strangers by only looking at their faces. However, later findings provided only partial support and the evidence is mixed regarding which traits can be accurately inferred from faces. In the current research, to provide further evidence on whether the Big Five and the Dark Triad traits are visible in the face, we report three studies, two of which were preregistered, conducted on both WEIRD (the US American) and non-WEIRD (Turkish) samples (N = 880). The participants in both the US American and Turkish samples were successful in predicting all Dark Triad personality traits by looking at a stranger's face. However, there were mixed results regarding the Big Five traits. An aggregate analysis of the combined dataset demonstrated that extraversion (only female), agreeableness, and conscientiousness were accurately inferred by the participants in addition to the Dark Triad traits. Overall, the results suggest that inferring personality from faces without any concrete source of information might be an evolutionarily adaptive trait.Item Can we diagnose disk and facet degeneration in lumbar spine by acoustic analysis of spine sounds?
