Item Impact of Platelet Count in Retinopathy of Prematurity(2020) Keskek, Nedime Sahinoglu; Gulcan, Hande; Yilmaz, Gursel; Akkoyun, Imren; 0000-0001-8544-103X; 33389935; T-4258-2017Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), including platelet count. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 137 infants in 3 subgroups: no ROP; mild RAP, and severe ROP requiring laser treatment (type 1 ROP). A retrospective review of records was performed and statistical analysis of possible risk factors for ROP including platelet count was evaluated by using logistic regression. Results: Birth weight (BW), gestational age (GA), and low platelet count in the first week after birth were significant risk factors for developing ROP (p=0.038, 0.02, and 0.004, respectively). BW, GA, ventilation, and lower platelet count were associated with progression to type 1 ROP (p=0.004; 0.027, and 0.021, respectively). Conclusion: Lower platelet count in the first week after birth is a risk factor for ROP development in addition to the previously established factors of ventilation need, low BW, and low GA.Item Platelet Membrane Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase-Specific Activity and the Clinical Course of Acute Coronary Syndrome(2019) Demirtas, Koray; Yayla, Cagri; Sade, Leyla Elif; Yildirir, Aylin; Ozin, Mehmet Bulent; Haberal, Aysegul; Muderrisoglu, Ibrahim Haldun; 0000-0001-8750-5287; 29996664; A-4947-2018gamma-Glutamyl transferase (GGT) participates in oxidative and inflammatory reactions inside the atheroma plaque and platelets. We evaluated whether platelet membrane gamma-glutamyl transferase (Plt-GGT) activity is a predictor of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) during 3 months follow-up of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS; MACE-3M). We included 105 patients who were hospitalized consecutively with the diagnosis of ACS. Patients with an MACE-3M were older, more likely to have hypertension, hyperlipidemia, family history of coronary artery disease(CAD), thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) risk score >4, higher Plt-GGT and serum GGT activities, serum C-reactive protein level, and lower left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) when compared to those without MACE-3M (all P values <=.05). By receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, 265 mU/mg for Plt-GGT, 30 U/L for serum GGT, and 45% for LVEF were determined as cutoff values to discriminate MACEs. Platelet GGT activity >265 mU/mg, TIMI risk score >4, and family history of CAD were independent predictors of MACE-3M (all P values <.05). Platelet GGT activity was as an independent predictor for MACEs in patients with ACS during the 3 months follow-up.Item The value of serum mean platelet volume in testicular torsion(2015) Cicek, Tufan; Togan, Turhan; Akbaba, Kaan; Narci, Huseyin; Aygun, Cem; 25762515Objective To compare the serum mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with testicular torsion and healthy control subjects. Methods This retrospective study compared clinical and demographic data from patients who underwent surgery for testicular torsion and healthy controls. Testicular torsion was diagnosed with a physical examination and Doppler ultrasonography. Age, leukocyte count, platelet count and MPV were recorded for all participants. Results A total of 50 patients with testicular torsion and 51 healthy control subjects were enrolled. There was no significant difference in age and platelet count between the two groups. Patients with testicular torsion had a significantly higher leukocyte count and MPV, compared with controls. According to receiver operating characteristic curve analysis performed for the prediction of testicular torsion, the best cut-off point for MPV was 7.7fl (sensitivity 62%, specificity 96%), and the best cut-off point for leukocyte count was 9.5x10(9)/l (sensitivity 58%, specificity 80%). Conclusions The MPV may be useful as an ancillary test for the diagnosis of testicular torsion. Further studies are needed in order to confirm these preliminary results.
