Item Marginal fit of 3-unit CAD-CAM zirconia frameworks fabricated using cone beam computed tomography scans: an experimental study(2021) Belgin, Huseyin Berkay; Kale, Ediz; Ozcelik, Tuncer Burak; Yilmaz, Burak; 34665345Whether cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans can be used for the fabrication of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) is not known. The purpose of the present study was to compare the marginal fit of 3-unit zirconia FDPs fabricated by using CBCT or 3-dimensional (3D) laboratory scanning. Extracted second premolar and molar teeth in a maxillary typodont model were prepared. The first molar was removed and the typodont model was scanned with a laboratory or a CBCT scanner to generate two virtual 3D cast groups (3DL and CBCT). Forty four 3-unit zirconia FDPs were designed on virtual casts and milled. The vertical marginal discrepancy (VMD) was measured by x100-magnification microscopy at seven locations on each abutment. A total of 616 measurements were made at 14 fixed locations in two groups of 22 specimens. The VMD data for 3DL and CBCT groups were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test (alpha = 0.05). The mean VMDs on premolar ranged between 44 and 55 mu m (median: 43-55 mu m) in 3DL, and 74 and 100 mu m (median: 72-93 mu m) in CBCT; and on the molar, between 47 and 114 mu m (median: 46-114 mu m) in 3DL, and 91 and 162 mu m (median: 93-156 mu m) in CBCT. There was a significant difference between the gaps in 3DL and CBCT groups (p < 0.001). FDPs fabricated using 3D laboratory scanner had significantly smaller VMDs. Nevertheless, the 3-unit zirconia FDPs fabricated using CBCT scans presented promising marginal integrity.Item Relationship between alveolar bone thickness, tooth root morphology, and sagittal skeletal pattern: A cone beam computed tomography study(2019) Coskun, Ipek; Kaya, Burcak; 30980091PurposeThe goal of this work was to examine the relationship between sagittal facial pattern and thickness of alveolar bone in conjunction with root morphology of teeth by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).MethodsThe study was carried out on the CBCT scans from 3group of patients (n=20 in each group). The first group involved skeletal class1, the second group involved skeletal class2, and the third group involved skeletal class3 patients. In all, 14permanent teeth and interdental regions in the maxilla and mandible were evaluated. Root length and root width were measured on each tooth. Buccal cortical bone thickness, cancellous bone thickness, and lingual cortical bone thicknesses were measured in each interdental region. Analysis of variance, Kruskall-WallisH and Mann-WhitneyU tests were used for statistical comparisons.ResultsNo significant difference was found between the groups for root length, root width, buccal cortical bone and lingual cortical bone thickness. A significant difference was observed between the groups for cancellous bone thickness as it was thicker in skeletal class2 group. Cortical bone was thicker in the mandible compared to maxilla on both buccal and lingual sides and it was thicker in the posterior region compared to the anterior region on the buccal side.ConclusionsDifferences in cancellous bone thickness between different sagittal facial patterns and differences in cortical bone thickness between different alveolar regions should be taken into consideration when planning orthodontic tooth movements and anchorage mechanics..Item Appraisal of the relationship between tooth inclination, dehiscence, fenestration, and sagittal skeletal pattern with cone beam computed tomography(2019) Coskun, Ipek; Kaya, Burcak; 30741575Objectives: To examine the relationship between sagittal facial pattern and dehiscence/fenestration presence in conjunction with buccolingual tooth inclination by using cone beam computed tomography. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on the cone beam computed tomography scans of the following three groups of patients (n = 20 in each group): Class I, Class II, Class III. Buccolingual tooth inclination, buccal dehiscence/fenestration presence, and lingual dehiscence/fenestration presence were evaluated on each tooth. Analysis of variance, Kruskall-Wallis H, Scheffe, and chi-square tests were used for statistical comparisons. Results: Differences (P<.05) were observed between the groups for inclination of upper incisors and all lower teeth except for second molars. Dehiscence prevalence in the upper buccal and posterior buccal regions was higher (P<.05) in the Class I group when compared with the other groups. Lower buccal and anterior buccal regions showed higher (P=.0001) dehiscence prevalence in all groups. No difference was observed in fenestration prevalence between the groups. The upper buccal and anterior buccal regions showed higher (P=.0001) fenestration prevalence in all groups. Conclusions: Orthodontists must consider concealed alveolar defects in treatment planning to avoid gingival recession or tooth mobility.Item Versatility of high resolution ultrasonography in the assessment of granulomas and radicular cysts: a comparative in vivo study(2019) Sonmez, Gul; Kamburoglu, Kivanc; Yilmaz, Funda; Koc, Cemre; Baris, Emre; Tuzuner, Aysegul; 31188679Objectives: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic potential of high resolution ultrasound with periapical radiographs (PR) and CBCT in assessing granulomas and radicular cysts. Methods: This study included a total of 33 teeth from 33 patients with periapical lesions. Subjects were distributed among three groups. A consisted of teeth that were extracted. B consisted of teeth treated with root-canal treatment followed by apical surgery. C consisted of teeth treated with root-canal treatment only. Pre-treatment PR, ultrasound and CBCT images were obtained for Groups A, B and C and 6 month post-treatment PR and ultrasound images were obtained for Groups B and C. In addition, histopathological analysis was performed on lesions in Groups A and B. Lesions were classified as either cystic lesions or granulomas. Width, height, depth, surface area and volume of lesions were measured using the built-in softwares of the appropriate imaging modalities. Measurements were compared by Wilcoxon and paired sample t tests. Ultrasound and histopathological findings were compared with lc and Mc Nemar. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: kappa coefficient (0.667; p = 0.002) suggested good agreement between ultrasound and histopathology. No statistically significant differences were found among periapical radiography, CBCT and ultrasound in the pre-treatment measurements of lesion width ( p = 0.308) or between CBCT and periapical radiography in the pre-treatment measurements of lesion height ( p = 0.863). In all cases, mean measurement values for all variables were lower for ultrasound than for CBCT. Conclusion: Ultrasound provided useful information for the diagnosis and assessment of granulomas and radicular cysts.Item Accuracy of CBCT images in the volumetric assessment of residual root canal filling material: Effect of voxel size(2019) Yilmaz, F.; Sonmez, G.; Kamburoglu, K.; Koc, C.; Ocak, M.; Celik, H. H.; 31417052Aims: Our aim was to compare three different voxel sizes of CBCT images for the determination of residual filling material volume in root canals when compared with micro CT. Material and Methods: Forty-two root canals of 14 extracted human maxillary molar teeth were retreated by using ProFile((R)) instruments. Images were obtained after retreatment by using ProMax 3D Max CBCT at 3 different voxel sizes (1) High resolution (0.1 mm); (2) High definition (0.15 mm); and (3) Normal resolution (0.2 mm). Two observers measured volumes of residual filling materials in exported CBCT images by means of 3D Doctor Software. Micro CT measurements were served as gold standard. Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Test were used for the comparison of CBCT and micro CT measurements. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: No statistically differences were found between the two observers for all measurements (P 0.05). There were no significant differences among different CBCT voxel sizes used (0.1 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.2 mm) (P 0.05). The Spearman correlation coefficients between CBCT at different voxel sizes significantly highly correlated with micro CT measurements for each observer (P < 0.05). Furthermore, no significant differences were found between the measurements obtained by the two observers in consideration to root canal location (P 0.05). Conclusion: CBCT images may provide useful information in the volumetric assessment of the amount of residual filling material in root canals for retreatment procedures.
