(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2023-06) Shamin Joby; Pratibha Sharma; Shree Prakash Jaiswal; Shobha Chamania; Rajpal Singh; Sunil Chandiwal; Lucy Kynge
ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: The primary goal of this study was to assess the knowledge of health care staff in basic nutrition care management of patients with burn injuries to help develop a checklist to ensure optimal nutrition support, prevent infection, and promote wound healing in patients with burn injuries. The secondary goal of the study was to promote education and awareness among health care workers on nutrition and the implementation of nutrition care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 20 participants, including doctors (n = 3), nurses (n = 10), medical technicians (n = 5), and patient care staff (n = 2). Data were collected by face-to-face interviews using our 2 evaluation forms (demographic details of the participants was form 1 and burns nutrition basic knowledge assessment was form 2). RESULTS: Mean age of participants was 29.9 years. Female-to-male ratio was 1:0.4. A pretest of form 2 was correctly answered by 93% of participants. Among participants, 70% stated that they had received training on nutrition in burn patients, but only 35% felt moderately confident about their knowledge and only 10% felt very confident in supporting patients in nutrition management. High-education level, receiving burns nutrition training, and seniority in the profession and in the institution were the effective factors for those with confidence in providing proper support. The posttest of form 2, after nutrition intervention education, was answered correctly by 99% of participants. CONCLUSIONS: Many participants had basic knowledge about burns nutrition, but they were not confident. Health care staff need periodical nutritional education sessions in addition to the basic awareness programs for burn injuries. The introduction of nutrition checklist can help to ensure quality nutrition to patients. The checklist compliance can be improved through education and enforcement.

(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2022-09) Ayse Gul Atay Doygaci; Ayse Ebru Abali; Elif Unlu; Santiago J. Santelis; Eylem Gul; Mehmet Haberal
ABSTRACT OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of first aid for minor burns of health care workers in a university hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 402 subjects including nurses (n = 163), medical technicians (n = 94), technicians/patient care support personnel (n = 145) participated. Data were collected by face-to-face interview technique using our 2 evaluation forms (characteristics of participants was form 1 and first aid knowledge on minor burns was form 2) (P < .005). RESULTS: Mean age was 29.7 years. Female to male ratio was 1:0.7. Form 2 was correctly answered by 76.9% of participants. Participants who stated that they have received first aid training on burns was 41.5%, but only 38.3% of the subjects felt confident for providing first aid. Running water was preferred by 85.6%. High education level, receiving first aid training, and seniority in the profession and in the institution were the effective factors for providing proper first aid (P < .005). Female (58.5%), single (59.8%), child-free (61.7%) participants and those who had attended first aid education programs more recently were prone to providing proper first aid than the others (P < .005). CONCLUSIONS: In the present study, many participants had basic knowledge about first aid for minor burns, but they felt unconfident. Health care staff need periodical educational programs specific to them in addition to the basic awareness programs for burn injuries.

    Donör Hastaneleri Eğitim Programı
    (Başkent Üniversitesi, 2005-01) İ. Tokalak; H. Karakayalı; R. Erdal; M. Haberal
Donor Hospital Education Program The first step toward increasing rates of tissue and organ donation (and transplantation activities) is through public education and maintenance of this information. Healthcare professionals play a critical role in this education, especially regarding cadaveric donation. Without the sharing of their knowledge, information gaps and discontinuity in procedures and techniques among the professional community will continue that will adversely affect the attitudes and policies of other healthcare professionals as well as the lay public. To eliminate this information gap and the lack of standard procedures and techniques, many countries sought to improve their educational programs according to national and international needs. Some of the most important examples of this include the European Donor Hospital Education Programme, Donor Action, and the Transplant Procurement Management Course. A similar program is needed for Turkey. We propose a nationwide Donor Hospital Education Program to improve the knowledge base of all healthcare professionals working in donor and transplant centers in Turkey and to standardize procedures and techniques among the profession. Improving the level of knowledge among healthcare professionals is the best way to improve transplantation activities and standardize the donation process. This educational program may be the model for all donor and transplant centers in Turkey implementing the Turkish Donor Hospital Education Program (TUDHEP).
