Item Contribution to the Identification of Burns According to Depth and Severity (Global and Regional) and to Formulation of Presumptive and Definitive Diagnosis and Prognosis(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2021-12) Fortunato BenaimItem Dermal Regenerators in Burns and Sequelae(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2021-12) Ricardo Roa; Gabriel DiazItem Development of Tissue Banks in Developing Nations: A Journey From Past to Future(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2021-03) Hari Shankar Meshram; Sanshriti Chauhan; Vivek B. KuteTissue banks are a relatively new concept in the emerging world. This review aims to comprehensively analyze the challenges and solutions for establishing tissue banks in developing nations. The burden of burns and road traffic accidents in the developing nations is disproportionately higher than in developed countries and so are the mortality rates associated with them. There is an unmet need for more tissue banks to counteract these problems. This was obvious from the historical aspect, with the era of tissue transplant emerging 3 decades later in developing nations versus developed nations and with many regions that have still not yet initiated tissue transplantation. The challenges ahead involve a lack of infrastructure, a lack of awareness, and many legal and ethical issues. A multidisciplinary team effort, even despite a lack of resources, is the mainstay of progress in tissue banks in resource-limited regions. The potential solutions to overcome this problem include simplified and applicable legislations, the development of continuous and long-term awareness programs, and integrated and harmonious efforts from all regions of the world. We hope that this review will help transplant authorities throughout the world to understand this problem statement and the need for timely action for concerting the path to successful tissue banking in emerging nations.Item Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Habits, Attitudes, and Perceptions Regarding Health in Argentina(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2021-09) Constanza CilleyRecent surveys conducted with the assistance of VOICES! Research & Consultancy, a research company with extensive experience in health-related research, are presented to understand how perceptions and beliefs of Argentine citizens on different aspects of health have been affected during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results are based on different surveys done by VOICES! together with different partners, offering international comparison. A primary source was the main findings of the annual WIN World Survey conducted by WIN International and VOICES!, which explored the views and beliefs on health and habits of 29 252 citizens from 34 countries around the world. The other source was the results of 2020 Gallup International Association and VOICES! global survey, which tracked the development of citizen's attitudes toward the pandemic and which was conducted in 47 countries around the world, including Argentina, and included 45 000 adult citizens. Finally, main insights of the nationwide public opinion research conducted in 2020 together with UADE Foundation, one of the main universities in Argentina, were also included in this study. The aim of this study was to understand opinions, attitudes, and perceptions of Argentines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on society in terms of health, with a special focus on the psychological effects.Item Review of Pediatric Burn Injuries in Egypt(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2021-12) Amr Mabrouk; Mohamed Samir Badawy; Amira Hussein Sabry; Salah NaserOBJECTIVES: Most childhood burns can be avoided if proper preventive measures, public education, and continuing medical education are applied. These actions are especially important in general hospitals, which are the first lines of management to provide good burn care facilities as near to the place of injury as possible. Here, we described the first aid and initial management of patients at our center, which are still far from ideal and which could explain the high mortality rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 507 acutely burned pediatric patients admitted to the Burn Unit of Ain Shams University (Cairo, Egypt) from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2020. Our objective was to analyze risk factors and demographic and epidemiological features of patients in our area, which could be used to define preventive measures that can be implemented to minimize burns in children and provide better quality of patient care. RESULTS: Of 7450 patients with burns patients who presented to our unit during the study period, 2831 were children between 2 months and 14 years (representing 38.0% of the total number). There were 1678 total admissions for all age groups during this period, and 507 were children, representing 30.2% of total admissions. Male-to-female ratio was 1.38:1. Four age groups were distinguished, according to children’s main activities and behavior, with 130 children (25.5%) <1 year of age, 242 children (47.8%) from 2 to 3 years of age, 109 children (21.5%) from 4 to 7 years of age, and 26 children (5.3%) from 8 to 14 years of age. Average age was 4.09 years. The burns occurred predominantly during the winter. CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis showed that most pediatric burns were avoidable.Item The Endocrine Heart and Burns: Release of Natriuretic Peptides in Response to Burn Injuries(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2022-06) Santiago J. Santelis; Beatriz A. Castillo-De Lima; Neel R. Patel; Abner Mavarez ValeroABSTRACT In addition to being a pump, the heart also has an endocrine function. The peptides synthesized and secreted from the heart may exert endocrine, autocrine, and paracrine effects. The natriuretic peptides are a family of vasoactive hormones that play a dominant role in the regulation of cardiovascular and renal homeostasis. The 2 major hormones synthesized by the heart are the atrial and the brain natriuretic peptides, and elevated circulating levels of these substances have important prognostic and therapeutic implications. Although plasma natriuretic peptide measurements are helpful in excluding chronic heart failure in the ambulatory setting, many factors independent of heart failure may influence their levels. During the acute phase response of severe burn injuries, the severity of the cardiac stress can determine the postburn outcomes, and the pleiotropic effects exerted by the natriuretic peptide system play a key role in this process by activating compensatory mechanisms that promote systemic arterial dilatation, diuresis, natriuresis, and renin inhibition. Natriuretic peptides may also play a role in the wound healing process, which could be of clinical utility to reduce apparent scar formation in burn patients.Item The Endocrine Response to Burn Injuries: The Role of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Hormones(Başkent Üniversitesi, 2022-03) Santiago J. SantelisABSTRACT Burn injuries are one of the most common forms of trauma worldwide. Immediately after burn injury, marked emotional and physical responses occur, which are brought about by sudden increases in sympathetic nervous system activity and endogenous stress hormone levels. Hypermetabolism is a hallmark of the stress response to burns, and it is associated with poor clinical outcomes. The role of the endocrine system in this response is complex and important, and almost all hormones take part in it. Although endocrine studies in patients with burns started in the early 1950s, the exact role of the pituitary gland in these alterations is unknown, with the biochemical pathways so far poorly defined. The early recognition of these changes and their treatment can improve clinical outcomes. The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge on how the hypothalamic-pituitary hormones respond to thermal injuries.
