Item Investigation of the Role of Icam-1 E469k and E-Selectin S128r Polymorphisms in Diabetic Neuropathy(2015) Oguz, Elif; Tabur, Suzan; Akbas, Halit; Korkmaz, Hakan; Torun, Aysenur; Dilmec, Fuat; Alasehirli, BelginIntroduction: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is one of the commonest complications of diabetes. The soluble adhesion molecules, E-selectin and intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-are indicators for endothelial activation. Recent studies demonstrated that these molecules are increased in patients with diabetes and diabetes-related complications. The present study was designed to investigate the possible association of two mutations, S128R in E-selectin and K469E in ICAM-1 with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in Turkish population. Materials and methods: One hundred thirty eight patients with DPN and 138 non-diabetic control subjects by similar age were enrolled in the study. Genotyping was done by polymerase chain reaction- restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results: No significant differences were found in the genotype and allele frequencies of ICAM E469K polymorphism between the groups of DPN patients and non-diabetic control subjects. There was also no statistically significant difference for E-selectin S128R polymorphism between DPN patients and non-diabetic control subjects. Conclusions: We firstly investigated the involvement ICAM-1 and E-selectin gene variants in development of DPN. These results suggested that the ICAM-1 E469K and S128R polymorphisms are not associated with susceptibility to DPN in Turkish population. Further studies in larger series and in different ethnic populations should be carried out to validate our findings.Item Role of prolidase activity and oxidative stress biomarkers in unexplained infertility(2021) Isbilen, Elif; Kulaksizoglu, Sevsen; Kirmizioglu, Mahmut; Komurcu, Ozge Karuserci; Tabur, Suzan; 34449881Objective Our aim was to explore the significance of serum prolidase enzyme activity and oxidative stress in women with unexplained infertility (UEI). Methods In this case-control study (n = 160; 86 cases; 74 controls) prolidase enzyme activity and total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and vitamin E were measured in plasma using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results Prolidase enzyme activity and TAS levels were particularly higher in the patient group (P = 0.013, P = 0.001, respectively). Decreased OSI levels were detected in the patient group (P = 0.001). There was a positive relationship of prolidase with vitamin E in both patient and control groups (r = 0.892, P = 0.001, and r = 0.659, P = 0.001, respectively). A positive, but weak, relationship was identified between prolidase activity and TOS levels and also between vitamin E and TOS levels in the UEI group (r = 0.265, P = 0.049, and r = 0.288, P = 0.014, respectively). No association was found between prolidase and TOS levels or between vitamin E and TOS levels in the control group (r = 0.0097, P = 0.527, and r = 0.085, P = 0.610, respectively). Conclusion Our results showed an association between serum prolidase activity and oxidative stress in UEI patients. Further studies including greater groups are required to show the role of reactive oxygen species in UEI.
