The Intellectual Structure of the Information Systems Field: Research Styles and Publication Patterns of North American and European Paradigms

This paper identifies the researches that have had the greatest impact on the Information Systems (IS) discipline and analyses the changes that have taken place in the intellectual structure of this discipline within the ongoing paradigmatic debates between Europe and North America. The methodology applies citation analysis and social network analysis to the articles published in four European and North American journals with the highest impact factors in the IS field. The findings of the study reveal a significant difference between the research styles and publication patterns of European and North American research traditions.
Yönetim bilişim sistemleri disiplininin bibliyometrik analizi

Bu tez çalışmasının amacı, bibliyometrik yöntemleri ile dünyada yönetim bilişim sistemleri disiplininin akademik gelişimi üzerine fikir sahibi olmak ve belgeler yoluyla ilişkisel bağlantıları ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmada ikisi Avrupa'dan, ikisi Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nden olmak üzere Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri çalışma alanında yüksek niteliğe sahip toplam dört akademik derginin 2017-2018 yılları içinde yayınladığı tüm makaleler incelenmiştir. Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri çalışma alanının çok disiplinli yapısı nedeniyle, bu alanda bilimsel yayın üreten üniversitelerin/ekollerin sıklıkla hangi alt konulara yoğunlaştığının sosyal ağ analiziyle bir haritasının çıkarılmasının anlamlı olacağı düşünülmüştür. Bu noktada temel amaç iki farklı akademik çalışma kültürü (Avrupa ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri) arasında farklılık olup olmadığının tespitini yapmaktır. Bu kapsamda en sık atıf yapılan makaleler, en sık atıf yapılan dergiler, en sık çalışılan alt çalışma konuları ve bu bildirilerin hazırlanması sürecinde faydalanılan makalelerin güncelliği de yine çalışmada çözümlenmiştir. Bu anlamda tez çalışması bulguları, YBS alanının dünyadaki gelişimi ve kıtalar arası rekabeti hakkında önemli karşılaştırma ölçütleri sunmaktadır. Çalışma sonucunda, atıf yapılan dergilerin ve araştırmacıların dağılımı, çalışma konularındaki çeşitlenme, atıf yapılan yayınların güncelliği ve yayın üretmeye gönüllü üniversitelerin sayısı gibi faktörler dikkate alınmış ve ABD ve Avrupa çalışma gelenekleri arasında çalışılan konular çerçevesinde belirgin farklılıklar olduğu, atıf yapılan makalelerin belirli makaleler üzerinde yoğunlaşmasından ziyade farklılaştığı ve atıfların yakın zamana dönük olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca YBS alanının bir kimlik oluşturma sürecinde olduğu ve araştırma konusuna dahil edilen dört derginin benzer bir duyarlılıkla hareket edip alanda bir YBS kültürü yaratma çabası içinde olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Özellikle mühendislik ve bilgisayar bilimlerine ilişkin konulara yer vermekle birlikte bu alanlardaki dergilere daha az atıf yapıyor olmaları, bu alanlardan ayrı bir disiplin olduklarını ispatlama amaçlarının en önemli göstergesidir. The aim of this thesis is to have an idea on the academic development of the discipline of management information systems in the world with bibliometric methods and to reveal the relational connections through documents. In this study, all the articles published by four academic journals in the field of Management Information Systems, two of which are from Europe and two from the United States, were in 2017-2018 are studied. Because of the multidisciplinary structure of the Management Information Systems study area, it was thought that it would be meaningful to make a map with social network analysis on which sub-subjects of universities / schools that make scientific publications are frequently concentrated in this field. The main objective at this point is to determine whether there are differences between two different academic study cultures (Europe and the United States). In this context, the most frequently cited articles, the most frequently cited journals, the most frequently studied sub-topics and the currentity of the articles used in the preparation of these papers were also analysed. In this sense, the findings of the thesis study provide important comparison criteria about the development of MIS in the world and the competition between continents. As a result of the study, factors such as the distribution of the cited journals and researchers, the diversity of the study subjects, the timeliness of the cited publications and the number of universities willing to make publications were taken into consideration and there are significant differences between the US and European studying traditions, it was found that the cited articles differ rather than concentrate on specific articles, and that the citations are recent. In addition, it is understood that the MIS area is in the process of forming an identity and the four journals included in the research subject are trying to create a MIS culture with a similar sensitivity. The most important indicator of their aim is to prove that they are a separate discipline from the journals in these fields, although they include issues especially related to engineering and computer science.
