Item Comparison of Acoustic and Stroboscopic Findings and Voice Handicap Index between Allergic Rhinitis Patients and Controls(2014) Koc, Eltaf Ozbal; Koc, Bulent; Erbek, Selim; 25667789Background: In our experience Allergic Rhinitis (AR) patients suffer from voice problems more than health subjects. Aims: To investigate the acoustic analysis of voice, stroscopic findings of larynx and Voice Handicap Index scores in allergic rhinitis patients compared with healthy controls. Study Design: Case-control study. Methods: Thirty adult patients diagnosed with perennial allergic rhinitis were compared with 30 age-and sex-matched healthy controls without allergy. All assessments were performed in the speech physiology laboratory and the testing sequence was as follows: 1. Voice Handicap Index (VHI) questionnaire, 2. Laryngovideostroboscopy, 3. Acoustic analyses. Results: No difference was observed between the allergic rhinitis and control groups regarding mean Maximum Phonation Time (MPT) values, Fo values, and stroboscopic assessment (p>0.05). On the other hand, mean VHI score (p=0.001) and s/z ratio (p=0.011) were significantly higher in the allergic rhinitis group than in controls. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the presence of allergies could have effects on laryngeal dysfunction and voice-related quality of life.Item Comparison of Clinical Outcomes Using A Piezosurgery Device vs. A Conventional Osteotome for Lateral Osteotomy in Rhinoplasty(2017) Koc, Bulent; Koc, Eltaf Ayca Ozbal; Erbek, Selim; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4825-3499; 28846787; HSB-4814-2023; B-7604-2019Our aim for this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes in patients who underwent lateral osteotomy with a Piezosurgery device or a conventional osteotome in open-technique rhinoplasty. This cohort trial involved 65 patients (36 women and 29 men; average age: 23.6 +/- 5.71 yr) who,underwent surgery between May 2015 and January 2016. Piezosurgery was used for lateral osteotomy in 32 patients, whereas 33 patients underwent conventional external osteotomy. These 2 groups were compared for duration of surgery, perioperative bleeding, postoperative edema, ecchymosis, pain, and patient satisfaction on the first and seventh postoperative days. The Piezosurgery group revealed significantly more favorable outcomes in terms of edema, ecchymosis, and hemorrhage on the first day postoperatively (p < 0.001 for all). Similarly, edema (p = 0.005) and ecchymosis (p < 0.001) on the seventh postoperative day also were better in the Piezosurgery group. Hemorrhage was similar in both groups on the seventh postoperative day (p = 0.67). The Piezosurgery group not only experienced less pain on the first postoperative day (p < 0.001), but these patients also were more satisfied with their results on both the first and seventh postoperative days. Results of the present study imply that Piezosurgery may be a promising, safe, and effective method for lateral osteotomy, a critical step in rhinoplasty. The time interval necessary for the learning curve is counteracted by the comfort and satisfaction of both patients and surgeons.Item Effect of Body Mass Index on Middle Ear Resonance Frequency(2018) Sozen, Miray; Oz, Isilay; Erbek, Selim; 29460823OBJECTIVE: Multifrequency tympanometry (MET) analyzes tympanograms obtained using different probe tones between 226 and 2000 Hz. An important parameter of MET is resonance frequency (RF). Studies have recently demonstrated that the RF value can vary depending on many factors. To provide new data regarding MET, middle ear RF values were investigated with regard to body mass index (BMI). MATERIALS and METHODS:This study included 78 volunteers (i.e., 156 ears) aged 18-40 years who did not have healing loss and whose otoscopic examinations were normal. Hearing thresholds were measured using pule tone audiometry, and RF values were recorded with immitansmetric measurements. The participants were divided into the following three groups according to their BMI: <18.5 kg/m2, Group 1; 18.5-24.9 kg/m(2), Group 2; and >25 kg/m(2), Group 3. The RE values were also analyzed. RESULTS: Although there was no significant difference between Groups 1 and 2 in terms of RF values, a significant difference was observed between Groups 1 and 3 and between Groups 2 and 3. CONCLUSION: In the light of these data, BMI values should be considered when middle ear RF values are assessed.Item Role of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms of Mammaglobin-A Gene in Nasal Polyposis: A Case Control Study(2020) Oz, Isilay; Ozdas, Sibel; Bastimur, Sibel; Ozdas, Talih; Muz, Sami Engin; Atilla, Huntuk; Kurt, Kenan; Erbek, Selim; 0000-0003-4825-3499; 0000-0002-7380-4566; B-7604-2019; AAJ-1452-2021Objective: Nasal Polyposis (NP) is a chronic inflammatory disease and genetic factors play an important role in the pathophysiology. Mammaglobin-A (MGA) gene expression was significantly higher in patients with NP and chronic rhinosinusitis compared to normal mucosa. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the MGA gene and nasal polyposis in the Turkish population. Materials and Methods: A total of 87 patients diagnosed with NP and 60 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Genotypes of MGA promoter SNPs c38C>G, c.21C>T, c55+186G>A and c.243+230A>T were determined by light SNP ASSAY after real time PCR analysis using genomic DNA samples obtained from the peripheral blood samples of all participants. Results: A total of 87 NP patients, 51 male and 36 female, with a mean age of 38.18 +/- 9.5 years were included in the study. No significant difference was determined at all positions c38C>G, c.21C>T, c55+186G>A and c.243+230A>T in nasal polyp patients compared to controls with and without allergic rhinitis (AR). Conclusion: MGA gene c38C>G, c.21C>T, c55 + 186G>A, and c.243 + 230A>T genotypes did not appear to be associated with susceptibility to NP with and without AR in our study population.
