In this study, we investigated the effect of Pycnogenol (R) on spatial learning and memory (SLM) function in rats subjected to closed head injury. Methods: The study was a randomized, experimental study of four groups, each containing six rats. Pycnogenol (R) was administered to rats in two groups (group three and four) daily for five days starting on day one. A Barnes maze was used to test SLM in the rats in all four groups. Group 1: These rats did not have a closed head injury and were not administered Pycnogenol (R). Group 2: On the day three, closed head trauma was inflicted. Group 3: Pycnogenol (R) was administered to the rats. On day three, closed head trauma was inflicted. Group 4: Only Pycnogenol (R) was administered. At the end of day five, the brain tissue of the 24 rats was removed. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in mean SLM durations on days one through five. No significant differences were detected in the pathological examination between of the four groups. Conclusion: Future studies that employ biochemical markers and free radical levels in the brain are needed.Item Effects of topical Coenzyme Q10, Xanthan Gum and Sodium Hyaluronate on corneal epithelial wound healing(2021) Asena, Leyla; Gokgoz, Gulsah; Helvacioglu, Fatma; Ozgun, Gonca; Deniz, Emine Ebru; Altinors, Dilek Dursun; 0000-0002-6848-203X; 0000-0002-4837-7937; 0000-0002-6026-0045; 34134604; E-5914-2016; AAY-7932-2021; AAH-8887-2021Background: The aim was to compare the effects of three different eye drops on corneal epithelial wound healing in an experimental model. Methods: Twenty-four eyes of 24 female BALB/c mice were included. A 2 mm central corneal epithelial defect was created. Topical Coenzyme Q10 + Vitamin E D-alpha-TPGS 4 x 1 was applied to Group A (n = 6), topical Sodium hyaluronate + Xanthan Gum + 0.3% Nethylmicine 4 x 1 to Group B (n = 6) and topical Sodium hyaluronate 4 x 1 to Group C (n = 6). Group D (n = 6) was the control group without treatment. Clinical scoring according to corneal fluorescein staining and histopathological evaluations was performed. Results: Clinical scores according to corneal fluorescein staining were similar in all groups on days 1 (p = 0.05), 2 (p = 0.15) and 3 (p = 0.62). Electron microscopy revealed disruption of intercellular junctions between corneal epithelial cells and intracellular vacuole formation in all groups except Group A. Corneal epithelial thickness and superficial epithelial microvillus arrangement were close to normal in Group A. The prognosis of hepatic angiosarcoma is poor with an average life expectancy of 6 months after diagnosis. Diagnosing hepatic angiosarcoma is challenging because of nondiagnostic liver biopsy or specious history and radiologic presentation. We report 2 cases with hepatic angiosarcoma which were diagnosed histopathologically in the native liver after liver transplant. One of 2 patients was lost to follow-up, and another patient died of relapsing hepatic angiosarcoma 18 months after the liver transplant.Item Liver Transplant in a Child With an Uncommon Co-Occurrence of Biliary Atresia and Bilateral Vesicoureteral Reflux(2014) Deniz, Emine Ebru; Terzi, Aysen; Ozdemir, Binnaz Handan; Haberal, Nihan; Baskin, Esra; Haberal, Mehmet; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1225-1320; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7528-3557; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9852-9911; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4361-8508; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3462-7632; 24635820; F-7546-2013; X-8540-2019; AAK-4587-2021; B-5785-2018; AAJ-8097-2021We report the clinicopathologic findings of a patient with biliary atresia associated with vesicoureteral reflux who underwent a liver transplant and nephroureterectomy simultaneously. The patient was a 22-month-old female infant born of a nonconsanguineous marriage, who was reported to be icteric from first day of life. Her antenatal history was significant for bilateral hydronephrosis. The results of a liver biopsy showed findings of biliary atresia, and the results of a radiograph showed bilateral vesicoureteral reflux. Therefore, the patient underwent a liver transplant and a right nephroureterectomy simultaneously. In the days after the operation, the patient died because of extrahepatic hematoma. In conclusion, a child having biliary atresia must remain for investigation of associated anomalies including vesicoureteral reflux.Item Lung Biopsy Findings of Patients Who Have Undergone a Liver and Kidney Transplant(2016) Ozgun, Gonca; Tepeoglu, Merih; Ozdemir, Binnaz Handan; Akcay, Eda Yilmaz; Ayva, Ebru Sebnem; Deniz, Emine Ebru; Haberal, Mehmet; 0000-0002-9894-8005; 0000-0002-7528-3557; 0000-0001-6831-9585; 0000-0002-2280-8778; 0000-0002-3462-7632; 27805533; AAK-5222-2021; X-8540-2019; AAK-1960-2021; AAK-1967-2021; AAJ-8097-2021Objectives: Our objective was to analyze the incidence of pulmonary disorders in solid-organ transplant recipients and report on outcomes in these patients. Materials and Methods: Seventy liver and kidney transplant patients, who underwent lung biopsy because of pulmonary symptoms between January 2000 and December 2015, were enrolled in the study. We examined and evaluated histopathologic findings of these patients based on clinical data recorded in patients' files. Results: Patients' mean age was 44.5 +/- 16.4 years. Of 70 patients, 25 underwent liver transplant and 45 patients underwent kidney transplant. Forty-six patients received organs from living donors and 24 from deceased donors. Biopsy results of all patients included nonspecific findings (28), organized pneumonia (2), tuberculosis (6), fungal infections (11), tumors (5), amyloidosis (1), diffuse alveolar damage (4), mixed bacterial infection (1), and bronchopneumonia (12). Forty-two patients (60%) died within 54.1 +/- 53.3 months after transplant and 24.6 +/- 41.9 months after lung biopsy. Autopsies were performed on 14 patients. The causes of fatal lung diseases included fungal infections (8), malignant tumors (4), amyloidosis (1), diffuse alveolar damage (4), and mixed bacterial infection (1). Aspergillosis was the most frequently implicated lung infection, occurring in 54.5% of patients with fungal infections. Conclusions: Pulmonary diseases remain an important cause of morbidity and mortality in solid-organ transplant recipients. Fungal infection, especially aspergillosis, was the leading cause of early death in these patients.
