    Authors at the boundary: Interaction of local and general scientific literature

    How a scientific literature is shaped both at the local and general level is an important question to answer. One practical way of achieving this task is to identify the roles played by authors (academicians) as actors creating and disseminating knowledge in the relevant literature. To this end, this study examines roles undertaken by authors in the field of learning organizations. Identifying role typologies first requires revealing the author citation network in the field. Citation network is a matrix that summarizes citations and citation numbers between authors. To construct this matrix, articles in the local and general literature in the field of learning organizations, published and indexed between January 01, 2015 and February 20, 2017, were collected from Google Scholar by using the Java-based Selenium Library. An author citation network with 19,525 actors was created from this list. A social network analysis was conducted to identify author roles, followed by a discussion of what these roles mean for the local literature. Despite defining four typologies, observing only one type of role typology indicates that the local literature is not well integrated with the general literature. This study recommends strategic assessments for increasing the contribution ability of local literature to general one. Using this approach, it would be possible to find answers to the questions of which roles to develop via which authors and relationships, and how to remove the obstacles to development of local literature.

    "Being in the Digital Box". Academic Staff Experiences in Online Practical Teaching: A Qualitative Study From Six Universities and Countries

    The COVID-19 pandemic has caused radical changes in education, as in everything else, bringing many challenges. Despite all the difficulties, the COVID-19 pandemic has enormous opportunities for online teaching and the use of digital technologies. A comprehensive understanding of this period is needed to investigate these opportunities. Thus, this study aims to explore the academic staff's experiences of online teaching and the use of digital technologies in practical skills -based courses in health care education. This study was conducted at six universities from six countries (Turkiye, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania). Data were collected between June 17, 2021 and November 30, 2021 via a focus group with an in-depth interview technique. 22 focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 117 participants. Colaizzi's method was used to evaluate the data to discover, comprehend, and define the experiences of academic staff. The analysis of the interview data resulted in 6 themes, 25 subthemes and 56 categories that captured participants' experiences regarding online teaching of practical skills and using digital technologies in health care education. The findings of the study provide crucial information that will help online teaching and digital technology for practical skills be successfully integrated.

    Challenges and needs of informal caregivers in elderly care: Qualitative research in four European countries, the TRACE project

    Background: Providing informal care may affects caregivers' life in different ways. Determining the needs of caregivers and supporting them can improve both the quality of life of the caregivers, as well as the elderly they take care of. Objective: To explore the experiences and needs of the informal caregivers in four countries. Design: Qualitative research method was used in the study. Methods: The qualitative data was collected through focus groups and individual interviews between December 2016-May 2017. In all countries interviews were conducted in the mother language of the informants. Informants of the qualitative research were adult people who take primary care of an individual with chronic diseases, aged 65 years or older. Data were collected from 72 informal caregivers from four European countries. Inductive content analysis was performed. Results: Informal caregivers identified 2 themes, 5 subthemes, 19 categories and 7 subtcategories. The themes highlighted two major issues: informal caregiver's challenges and needs related to the management of care of elderly and caregivers' personal needs. Conclusion: The important and charming results of the present study are, difficulties of managing caregiver's own life, and coping with emotions are common in four countries. Identifying challenges and needs of informal caregivers enable healthcare professionals to develop care strategies and plan interventions focused to support and help to reduce the burden of care for elderly with chronic diseases.

    Digital Competence Of Faculty Members In Health Sciences Measured Via Self-Reflection: Current Status And Contextual Aspects

    This descriptive study aims to determine the digital competence level of faculty members who teach in the health sciences, empirically considering possible contextual aspects. Two data collection instruments were used: a self-reflection questionnaire to assess digital competence, and a survey querying demographics and aspects of teaching and learning context. In total, 306 health sciences faculty members from six universities voluntarily participated the study. The results revealed that a majority of the faculty members have intermediate (integrator or expert) level of digital competence, which is described as being aware of the potential use of digital technology in teaching and having a personal repertoire for its use under various circumstances. Age, digital teaching experience, perception of work environment, and previous teaching experience in fully- or partially-online courses were identified as influencing factors for digital competence. Faculty members in health sciences were able to integrate digital technologies in their teaching practices. Health education institutions may facilitate the use of digital technologies in teaching and learning environments. Moreover, institutions or stakeholders should consider that digital competence requires practice and experience in meaningfully-designed digital environments and tools.

    Effects of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions Against COVID-19: A Cross-Country Analysis

    Prolonging non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) used in the control of pandemics can cause a devastating effect on the overall economic and social welfare levels. Therefore, policymakers are facing a difficult duty in terms of implementing economically and socially sustainable and acceptable measures. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of NPIs implemented to control the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, eight NPI measures were analysed, and their effects on the number of cases were investigated for France, Spain, China, and South Korea. In the study, the treatment effect of these mechanisms on the daily increase rate of the total number of cases during a certain period was analysed by using logarithmic linear regression with a dummy variables model. The findings indicate that the measures are effective against the spread of the pandemic at different levels. The findings also suggest that the most effective measure in decreasing the number of cases is workplace closure. An analysis comparing the effectiveness of countrywide measures and regional measures shows that school closing is the most effective measure to decrease the number of cases when implemented countrywide as opposed to regional implementation.

    Experiences Of Physicians On Defensive Medicine: A Qualitative Study From Türkiye

    This study aimed to investigate the experiences of physicians regarding defensive medicine (DM) practices. A qualitative study was developed with a descriptive phenomenological approach and the study was conducted in a university hospital in Turkiye. Data were collected between 1 February 2022 and 15 March 2022 via face-to-face, in-depth interviews from 21 participants. Inductive content analysis, which is very suitable for use in health-related research, was used. The analysis of the interview data resulted in 3 main themes, 9 themes, and 24 sub-themes. Main themes described the experiences of physicians: reasons for DM practices, consequences of DM practices, and measures to prevent DM practices. The findings showed the multidimensional nature of DM practices that must be considered in the strategies to be developed to prevent this behavior.

    The Impact of National Culture on the Increase of COVID-19: A Cross-Country Analysis of European Countries

    In recent years, countries have been fighting with increasing momentum against outbreaks. This struggle requires the effective implementation of several measures that are required in medical science. However, the cultural characteristics of each society prevent these measures from being applied in the same way globally. One area in which social scientists have not applied much effort is observing the impact of countries' cultural characteristics in the fight against outbreaks. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether cultural differences among countries have an impact on their fight against outbreaks. This study uses the COVID-19 pandemic?s total cases and selected European countries' cultural dimension scores as data. Due to the differences in the measurement units of cultural and outbreak variables, a stepwise multiple logarithmic regression analysis is preferred to select the proper regression model. The results have shown that power distance has a significant and negative effect on the increase rate of the total COVID-19 cases per million (IRTCCPM). In addition, the results have demonstrated that both individualism and in-dulgence have significant and positive effects on IRTCCPM, at the 95 % confidence level. How -ever, the hypotheses concerning the impacts of masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation on the IRTCCPM are rejected at the alpha = 0.05 level. In light of the findings of this study, it can be asserted that countries act in harmony with their cultural characteristics in the formal or informal practices of their fight against outbreaks. The contributions of the study can be discussed in academic and practical fields.

    Is training for informal caregivers and their older persons helpful? A systematic review

    Background: The steady increase in the number of people suffering from chronic diseases and increasing life expectancy raises new demands on health care. At the same time, the need for informal caregivers is increasing. This study aims to perform a systematic review of the methodologies used to identify effect of different types of training on informal caregivers and their older persons. Methods: MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL and Ovid were searched from December 2016 and April 2017. The following keywords were used; "informal caregiver", "training" "elderly", older persons". Identified publications were screened by using the following inclusion criteria; systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort and multicentre studies, English language full text journals, samples or interventions that included caregivers of older persons and published in last 10 years. Results: Twenty four studies (12 randomised control trials, 8 intervention studies and 4 systematic reviews) were included. Most of the randomized controlled trials involved both caregivers and elderly. Pretests and post-tests were used in intervention studies (5 out of the 8 studies). ICT-based, psychosocial interventions on family caregivers' education program for caregivers were applied. Caregivers following a supportive educative learning had a significantly better quality of life. Conclusions: The findings of this systematic review suggest that support interventions for caregivers can be effective in reducing caregivers' stress, with a consequent improvement of the quality of care. However, results are based on relatively small studies, reporting somewhat controversial findings supporting the need to perform further research in this field.

    Knowledge transfer roles of subsidiaries in MNCs' networks

    Purpose Although there have been a considerable number of studies regarding subsidiary role typology in multinationals' management literature, there appear to be few studies that consider knowledge-based role typology from the network-based perspective. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap and extend the study of Gupta and Govindarajan (1991). Thus, the study focuses on answering the following research question: Do subsidiaries have different roles in terms of knowledge flows within a multinational company (MNC)? Design/methodology/approach This empirical study has been carried out as an explorative single case study. An MNC with 15 foreign subsidiaries headquartered in Turkey, which operated in the manufacturing of household appliances and consumer electronics, has been selected as the case. Knowledge transfer is analyzed in this MNC from the network perspective. Findings Four role typologies are detected for subsidiaries of the MNC: collector transmitter, collector diffuser, converter transmitter and converter diffuser. Research limitations/implications - Findings of this study are specific to this case. Testing the findings in a sample consisting of subsidiaries of MNCs producing transnational products may contribute to the generalizability of these roles. Practical implications - This study offers potentially important findings for MNC managers to use. First, in this study, knowledge flows' route could be defined within MNCs' dual network. Second, role typologies could inform MNC managers to design their MNCs' knowledge network. Originality/value The suggested typologies are expected to more accurately define the roles of subsidiaries within contemporary MNCs which are accepted to be transformed from hierarchical structures to network-based organizations.

    The Necessity of Sector Carrying Capacity in Multinational Companies' FDI Location Choice

    The aim of this study is to define the carrying capacity as a new criterion in multinational companies' foreign direct investment (FDI) location choice. The validity of such a definition requires the existence of a causal relationship between FDI and the number of companies at the investment location. As carrying capacity is a function of the sector population, FDI refers to the decisions of foreign investors regarding location choice. With this in mind, the company numbers and FDI data used belonging to 34 sub-sectors of Agriculture, Industry and Services sectors in Turkey between the years of 2006-2016 were analyzed. The Granger causality test was applied to investigate the causal relationship between the company numbers and FDI. As a result of the findings, a causality relationship between the number of companies and FDI was determined in 29 of the 34 sub-sectors. A causality relationship could not be found in 2 sub-sectors. Analysis was not possible in the remaining 3 sub-sectors because of a lack of data. The results show that carrying capacity can be used as decision criterion in multinational companies' FDI location choice. In addition to this main result of the study, predictions for the investment decision are presented in the light of the analyses along with evaluations of the carrying capacity of the Agriculture, Industrial and Services sectors.

    SOURCES THAT MANAGERS PREFER FOR BUSINESS INFORMATION NEEDS

    This study aims to reveal how business managers associate their information needs and the information sources to meet these needs. In order to answer this question, face-to-face interviews were carried out with a total of 327 business managers working in various sectors. Information sources are encoded by using content analysis with personal and non-personal, internal and external dimensions. Results obtained have shown that managers mainly prefer non-personal information sources. Accordingly, business managers who face problems of sustainability and competitiveness seek personal and internal information while those who face problems of growth and innovation seek non-personal and external information. As for the problem profitability, managers refer to non-personal and internal information. The findings aim to contribute to strategic management and environmental scanning literature as well as to implementers. The research results might be guiding for identifying the information needs of managers in a more focused way and meeting this need more efficiently.
