Item Problematic Technology Use in University Students: Example of a Foundation University(2022) Aktan, Mehmet Can; Gokcearslan, Elif; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5064-4766This study, which focuses on the use of problematic technology in university students, focuses on the dimensions of the relationship university students establish with technology, and aims to reach a holistic and deep understanding of the negative and destructive effects and consequences of this relationship. The research designed in quantitative design is based on the relational screening model. Within the scope of the research, it was aimed to look at the technology usage habits of the participants. For this purpose; Personal Information Form, Technology Addiction Scale and Technological Addiction Scale were used. The sample of demographic information obtained from university students at a foundation university consists of 392 participants, 340 (86.7%) female and 52 (13.3%) male students. Participants' technology usage characteristics, time spent with technology, thoughts about the COVID-19 process and addiction levels were revealed within the scope of the findings. Considering that deprivation, difficulty in control, impaired functionality and social exclusion are indicators of problematic technology use, it is seen that the time spent on technological components and usage habits are predictors of problematic use. The results have been discussed in the light of the current literature.Item Social Group Work Practice in Coping with Problematic Technology Use in Adolescents: A Mixed Method Research(Başkent Üniversitesi Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi, 2024-05-23) Aktan, Mehmet Can; Gokcearslan, ElifProblematic technology use is a growing concern among adolescents, with those aged 12-18 being particularly vulnerable. This study aims to investigate the technology usage habits of students, assess their addiction levels, and mitigate any problematic patterns. Conducted at a pilot high school in Ankara, T & uuml;rkiye, the research involved 630 students aged 14-17. Quantitative data collection utilized the Personal Information Form, Technology Addiction Scale, and Technological Addiction Scale. Qualitative data collection included selecting 10 students for group social work sessions. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS, while NVIVO was used for qualitative analysis. The study identified high, medium, and low levels of technology addiction among students, highlighting psycho-social difficulties such as social exclusion, impaired functionality, difficulty in controlling technology use, and deprivation. Applying a cognitive-behavioral approach, group social work sessions in the form of psycho-educational groups proved effective in addressing problematic technology use in adolescents. The findings were contextualized within existing literature, with recommendations for future research including the inclusion of control groups and exploration of different therapeutic approaches in group studies. Self-compassion is the adoption of an understanding, kind, and accepting attitude toward oneself instead of judgmental and self-critical tendencies. Especially for social work students, practitioners, and academics, self-compassion is a significant concept both for maintaining personal well-being and for effectively engaging in intervention processes with clients. However, when the national social work literature is examined, it appears that studies focusing on self-compassion remain limited in number. This study, designed in a qualitative pattern, aims to examine the awareness and recognition of self-compassion as a concept and practice among social work students, practitioners, and academics, as well as its use in social work practices. Within the scope of the study, individual interviews were conducted with a total of 31 participants — 12 undergraduate social work students, 12 social work practitioners, and 7 academics — using a semi-structured interview form. The interviews were conducted online or face-to-face and recorded with participants' consent. The recordings were transcribed and analyzed using the MAXQDA 2024 software. Based on the findings obtained from the participants, four main themes were identified. The first theme includes the participants’ views on the theoretical background of the concept of self-compassion. The second theme addresses the participants’ reflections on the importance of self-compassion in human life. The third theme involves their personal experiences with self-compassion and their individual relationships with the concept. The final theme presents findings on the relationship between the discipline of social work and self-compassion, based on participants’ statements. According to the research findings, it was concluded that self-compassion has not been sufficiently included in the social work discipline and has not been addressed comprehensively at either the theoretical or practical level. The integration of self-compassion into the field of social work at both theoretical and practical levels should be supported.
