Abstract
Bu araştırma sektörel düzeyde rekabetçi etkileşime odaklanarak
rekabetçi hamlelere karşı misillemelerin belirlenebilir olup olmadı-
ğı konusunu tartışmaya açmaktadır. Firmaların başlattığı rekabetçi
hamle karşısında, rakibin misillemede bulunmayı ertelemesinin ya
da karşılık verememesinin avantaj sağladığı bilinmektedir. Ancak
bazı hamlelere birkaç saat içerisinde misillemede bulunulabilmek-
tedir. Rekabetin yoğun olduğu çevrede, rekabet avantajının elde
edilebilmesi için misillemelerin tahmin edilebilmesi ve oluşumunun
izlenmesi önem taşımaktadır. Çalışmanın örneklemi olarak Türki-
ye’de faaliyet gösteren havayolu firmaları seçilmiştir. Araştırmada
öncelikle firmaların gerçekleştirdikleri rekabetçi hamleler sınıflan-
dırılarak, rekabetçi etkisi, hamle yoğunluğu, uygulama süresi ve
hamle türü belirlenip aralarındaki ilişki resmedilmiştir. Buna göre
hamlelerin özelliklerinden yola çıkarak misillemeler tahmin edile-
bilmektedir.
This research focuses on competitive interaction at the industry
level and initiates a discussion on the subject by investigating
whether competitive responses can be predicted or not. The fact
that a delay or not responding to a competitive action generates
an advantage for the firm is well known. However, some actions
are responded in a few hours. Highly competitive environments
require follow-up and prediction processes in order to keep and
maintain competitive advantage. The sample of this research
consists of the firms operating in the airlines industry in Turkey. In
this research, the competitive actions undertaken by firms are ca-
tegorized. Then competitive impact, attack intensity, implemen-
tation requirement and type of action are identified and the re-
lationships among each other are illustrated. The results suggest
that rivals’ responses can be predicted by each of these action
characteristics. In the industry, a move which has great competi-
tive impact is less the number of countermoves. Response lag is
slower, even if the competitive moves in this aspect are respon-
ded. However, it is seen that the competition of high intensity mo-
ves have faster responses. Compared to strategic moves, tactical
actions are responded with higher number of responses and the
momentum of responses is accelerated. This demonstrates that
tactical moves with high competitive effect and action density
are hard to respond and it takes time for the rivals to respond.

university strategies, which we operationalize as the extent of dis-
ciplinary diversification. Based on data on all Turkish universities
that existed during the 1982-2014 period, we show that diversifi-
cation in public and private universities tend to be patterned after
the mean diversification within each university type. We also find
that these institutional effects on strategy are negatively mode-
rated by the degree of differentiation in strategies among uni-
versities belonging to each type and the extent of competition,
the latter effect being stronger in the case of private universities.
The article concludes with a discussion of what our findings show
and imply with respect to the institutionalist literature and for the
higher education field in Turkey.
