Velázquez?s Las Meninas is one of materpieces of the 17th century which discusses the representation problem. In this painting there are nine people depicted, one of them is the painter himself and the others are the palace people. When we look at the painting carefully we see the reflections of two other people in the mirror depicted in the middle of the painting: they are the queen and the king. Michel Foucault claims that in this painting the subject of the representation is the discourse of the sovereignty of the queen and the king. According to Foucault, the sovereignty is not directly represented in the painting, but in the focus of the gazes of the palace people in the painting which is the proof of their power. In this paper, I claim that Velázquez puts two different resources of power in his painting; in other words there are two different types of sovereignty depicted in the painting. One of them, as Foucault says is the sovereignty which belongs to the queen and the king. The other one belongs to the painter himself which can be called the sovereignty of art and the artist. In Las Meninas we see many paintings hanged on the walls of the palace. Only the subjects of these two paintings can be seen: one of them is Pallas and Arakhne which was painted by Rubens, the other one is a copy of Jordaens?s Apollon and Marsyas. Both of these paintings? subjects are the myths about the competition between the gods and human beings. This is the great dilemma of Velázquez: If we examine the life of the painter we will find out that all through his life he wants so much to be a noble person and struggles for it, but he cannot succeed, because in the century he lives, a painter is a mere craftsman; only towards the end of his life does the king give him a title of dignity. Las Hilanderas is another masterpiece which again suggests that the artist has the real power: he is enabled through his talent. The subject of Las Hilanderas is the weaving competition between a goddess Pallas (Athena) and a human being Arakhne. In Las Hilanderas Arakhne (not the goddess) is depicted as the winner of the competition. In this painting the beautiful weaving of Arakhne is depicted as the copy of Tiziano?s Europa proof of absolute power of the artist facing the power of the queen and the king. Thus, Velázquez proves that art and the artist have the sovereignty by demonstrating the artist?s talent as more powerful than the political power of the aristocracy of his age.tr
