This research problematizes the possibility of a counter hegemony in Turkey and it is interested in understanding the capacity of the women’s movement in Turkey in leading an agonistic articulation between different social demands. Research in this study revolves around the following question: Could women’s movement which has a strong reaction mechanism be constituent actor of counter-hegemony?” So, it tries to understand how women’s movement in Turkey conceptualizes the existing power relations that constitute the current hegemony. In that respect, women’s movement in Turkey is assessed from the perspective of radical democracy theory of Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau. The main argument of this thesis is that when looked from the perspective of radical democracy theory, women’s movement appears as having a considerable potential of deciphering the existing hegemony and also articulating the social demands which exclude and are excluded by the hegemony in Turkey. The main reasons behind this argument are the women’s movement’s deep-rooted history, its openness to combine theory with practice/action, and the notion of intersectionality which has had a place in women’s movement since the 1960s. Throughout its long history, women’s movement in different parts of the world has raised an awareness as to the fact that gender inequality and inequalities stemming from class, race and ethnic and religious identity are not disconnected. To the contrary, different practices of marginalizing and externalizing are closely related to each other. They realized that these were all socio-political issues and acts of oppression, exploitation and discrimination. Subsequently, this recognition shifted the focal point of women’s movement. The light of all these insights gave us a vision about women’s movement in Turkey regarding its counter hegemonic capacity vis a vis the existing neoliberal conservative hegemony. According to the theoretical framework of this research, counter-hegemony is only possible if there is an equivalence in different social demands of social identities opposing to the existing hegemony. Hence it is significant to carry out a research about the counter-hegemony argument in the women’s movement.en_US
