The aim of the present study is to investigate the interrelationship between body mass index, food addiction, impulsivity, depression, and anxiety.
The obese group consisted of 48 patients who were examined at the Outpatient Endocrinology Clinics at Baskent University Ankara Hospital (BMI>30). The normal weight group (BMI between 18.5 and 24.99, N=43) and the overweight group (BMI between 25 and 29,99, N= 55) were chosen among the Başkent Üniversity Hospital staff. All three groups were evaluated by Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). ―The Socio- demographic Information Survey‖, ―Yale Food Addiction Scale‖, ―UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale‖, ―Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)‖, ―Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI)‖ were given to each of the participants, as well.
The results of the study showed that food addiction is more common among the obese participants. We also found that food addicts are more impulsive and more depressive. This relationship seems to be stronger at women.
Finally, we can say that food addiction may be an important subtype of obesity which is multidimensional. The results of the study imply that consideration of the psychiatric disorders or syndromes such as food addiction, impulsivity, depression and anxiety is important in the treatment and assessment of obesity. Considering all the comorbid psychiatric disorders such as food addiction, impulsivity, depression and anxiety, psychiatric evaluation is of great importance in the assesment and treatment of obesity.
